Schooling Tangs???
I want to get some fish that will school, but don't want to get chromies. An LFS suggested tangs, either Yellow or Hippo. Has anyone had success with this concept, it sounded cool when he suggested it to me. He agreed to take them back in a few years when they start to get too big, so I thought it would be sweet if I could get 8-10 of them.Any thought out there on this?

You need to read alot of books!!!!!
How large is your tank?
Your LFS said he would take them back in a few years? They only take a few months and they are full grown.
WOW!! I don't mean to sound harse.....Well actually I do. But... OOhh someone PLEASE take over here!!!!

Sorry got to concur here, I know you see bunches in tanks at LFS, but they are hopefully in and out so fast, and in bare holding tanks, they adapt an uneasy truce. The chances of it working at home is not good. I have sween a couple 300+ gallon tanks that had a half dozen tangs in and long term results were not pretty

you would need a wicked sized tank in order to keep a school of tangs.
if you do not like chromis then try bar gobies or scissor-tailed gobies, the school nicely.

While many tangs (Powder Blue for instance) run in huge schools in the ocean, they really don't do so well in schools in the home aquarium. For any type of "schooling" to occurr you would need a very large tank. I have seen mixed pairs in tanks. Such as a Purple and yellow tang. But again, this is in a larger tank (90 gal) and they were introduced at the same time and there was a great deal of live rock so they could each have territory.
While I didn't notice what size tank you had, I'll assume at least 55gal... If you don't want chromis... how about 3 small perc clowns? Lots of personality and attractive and a neat "swimming" style.

Definately get some zebra gobies. They are so cool. I have 2 of them in my tank and they like to play and fuss and nip and flare their fins. Very cool to watch.
Also don't get down on the Chromis. They rock! I had a group of three for awhile. Very entertaining.
Also never trust a LFS. Sorry but unless you've got a real gem that you know and trust the salesman in them will take over and send you home with a school of eels.

yeah it'd take a pretty big tank in order for them (chromis) to truly school. mine just kinda hang out together. but theyre still fun to watch, and SUCH a great color!

What kind of tangs do you have? I don't mean to sound harsh, but that statement is just wrong! I have 3 diff. tangs over 4 yrs. old and have grown about 1.5".
I agree that they are not good schooling fish for a captive system. I like the chromis, both green and blue.

Meaning 4-5 inches. Too big to have 8-10 in a tank.
The Hippo tang can reach a size of 12 inches and the yellow tang can reach a size of 8.

Chromis are small and placid compared to most tangs

Hey guys to keep from getting flamed any more, heres the deal. I have a 210 gal tank that I just finished the set up on. I had a 150 for a couple of years and transfered everything into the 210. I was talking to the LFS about anthias's and that's when he suggested tangs. I wasn't too keen on his idea, but wanted to bounce it off of everyone here. I appreciate the alternate schooling species that have been suggested. I'll start researching them now.

anthias would not exactly school in that size tank either. they will be close together but not really school. it takes a lot of room to get something to really school.
if you get anthias, make sure you get the biggest, baddest male, and the rest small females. you do not want any females that are thinking about turning male on ya. they will fight, and at least one will be the looser.
