Percula's

I picked up a pair of tank raised over the weekend. I'm not going to get an anenome so I was wondering what soft corral might make a good surrogate for this pair.

I have a Bubble Anemone for my clown. but the other day the guy at my LFS was talking about how his clown uses his bubble coral as a host. He said that it took him a long time to take to it though.

I find that mine loves Xenia. So you can try that. The nice thing is, with xenia, it won't die from being bothered by the clowns. Some corals close up when the clowns brush up against them and eventually die.

My last little Perc (May Neptune rest his soul ) absolutely loved the star polyps in my little tank. He would play and wallow in them all day. When he was very tiny, he adopted a large Hawaiian feather duster as a host. Very funny watching him; the duster closes up with a swirling motion and the perc would swirl right along with it.

The star polyps got huge and spread all over that corner of the tank. They haven't grown as much since he died; they were obviously getting something out of the association.

My Maroon clown's favorite is the big Gold Crowned Toadstool in my tank, but she has at times shown interest in the open brain and one of the mushroom colonies. She never has shown any interest in the Frogspawn. Clowns are funny that way

Jeff,
My Ocellaris have used just about everything in the tank at one time or another, from a cluster of oyster shells before corals to my Frogspawn to Ricordea mushrooms.

Besides the bubble corals, other Euphylids such as torch, anchor and hammer. Large colts are sometimes chosen and Sarcophytons like large toadstools are good ones too. I got interested in soft corals after seeing a pair of clowns hosting in a big(12") toad that looked similar to one of the carpet anemones.
Clowns hosting outside anemones and even with can be chancy at best, no guarentees, and tank raised clowns seem less inclined to host than wild caught, however behaviour in a given species can have a wide range, so its all a guessing game till they decide, enjoy
