Unhappy

Ok I need some serious advice...

In the last mnth I have lost 1 peppermint shrimp, 1 emerald crab, a cleaner shrimp on Sunday and today my other cleaner is nonexsistant. I have been looking for a culprit to no avail. I don't think it's water quality issue because all of my snails, seas cuke, and clams are fine(with the exception of one that I have my thoughts about but nevertherless). Plus the only evidence I have seen of these organisms was a claw from an emerald crab that the Sargussum was playing with. I am now begining to eye my Sargassum triggerfish as the culprit. I really need some expert advice. I have checked all of my water parameters and everything is where it needs to be. Like I said, all inverts that wouldn't be considered food are doing fine. Should I get rid of the fish? He's about, 3.5" long, and seems to always have an appetite.

"The Sargassum is a solitary fish occasionally found in small groups, and enjoys feeding on crabs and seas urchins."
-DALiWorld.com

I would say take it out.

I had the same problem when I first added my Huma Trigger. It's their nature to eat crustations. My tank was like a deli for him. He polished off 2 Sally's, 2 Peppermints, 2 Emeralds, 1 Cleaner, and numerous hermits and snails. If you want these critters you should not buy preditors. I feel for you because I've been there.

sargassum triggers are generally considered one of the more reef safe triggers. they generally are planktonivores. each fish is an individual though. triggers in general are crustacean eaters. if i were to guess on something that it would eat i would guess your shrimp. sorry to hear that, i think they are neat looking fish.

Thanks for the advice guys...it just confirmed my fears. I don't have the dirt on him, but it seems awfully strange. I'll be getting him out of my tank. I just have to find a place for him to go.

Update...I have removed the sargassum. Not only will this move benefit the trigger (bigger tank) it will also lower my bioload and eliminate a potential predator.

Several species of trigger are considered "reef safe" insofar as they don't harm corals or sessile inverts... offer them a lobster dinner though and all bets are off
