New False Leapord Wrasee - Pics (800X600)

Thought I would share my pic of my false leapord wrasse I got last week as well. I have been told that it is most likely a M. Ornatus but could possibly be a supermale M. Meleagris.

Here it is:

I got it at the LFS where they were amazed at how well it had shipped. It is already eating out of the water column and I have plenty of live food for it to snack on as it's only competitor in a 415 gallon tank for pods is a 1.5" six-line.

FWIW, Nathan

Beautiful fish Nathan! Nice pic.

Ya know, in all the homework I did starting my reef tank, I must have skipped the part about getting a digital camera. Looks like I'll have to cut the kids allowance for a week or two! LOL

Oh boy Nathan, that is one gorgeous fish! I have a real soft spot (in my head maybe, lol) for the fish in the Leopard wrasse family. They are definitely on my I-want list; I've thought about setting them up in a tank with sea grass.

I wish you continued good success with it; the shipping seems the hardest part for these fish, if he's eating, that's a good sign. They're pretty hardy once they've acclimated.

Thanks guys!

I was pretty happy with it. Seems to be doing really well so far. I really am amazed that it is already eating out of the water column as leapord wrasses are supposed to be difficult feeders. I was prepared for it to not eat prepared foods as I have a relatively large tank with limited food competitors, but this is even better! I guess we will see the impact on the critter population in the tank after a few months though! Hopefully it won't be too bad.

Also, thanks for letting us share our pics on the site. It really is nice to share a pic of your fish/coral/clam, etc. with others who actually can appreciate the difference between a leopard wrasse and a six-line wrasse.

Oh well, Thanks again. Nathan

Beautiful pic! I have kept what I have identified as a common leopard wrasse {Macropharyngodon meleagris} for over 4 years. They never cease to amaze-today the ice storm kept shutting down the electric, and each time it went off he dug in to go to sleep! When it came on,he would pop back up out of my DSB.I obtained this fish as a juvenile.I have seen him eat crazy things like scraped off coralline algae flakes, and micro-brittlestars no other fish will even look at. He is very good at keeping the DSB white,as he stirs up a detritus dust cloud EVERY evening.I have him on the opening page of my website and would especially like to hear from ANYONE with a mated pair of these wrasses.I also welcome others questions, comments, and correspondence on these fish, as well as Anampsas sp.wrasse...Gary

Hi Gary,

Good to have you join us!
Please tell us more about your tank(s); sounds like you have some good reefing experience!

Nathan,
Beautiful fish and nice photo. Yes, the postapic feature is great, not only for showing off our "stuff" but also for problem solving and ID.

Beautiful fish Nathan. I have just purchased a leopard wrasse. In fact, he is just about to be released into the general community as we speak. I am still gathering info on this species. I know they can be a bit tough to feed. There are quite a few small amphipods living in the tank for him to munch on. Are there any supplimental foods that are recommended in addition to chopped fish, pippies and brine shrimp ? Do they burrow into the substrate at night? Any other important info I should know?

Thanks
