New Crosshatch Won't Eat
Got this 4" Crosshatch by MO yesterday and it came in with a pretty sunken belly (hopefully you can see it in the attatched image). Don't know whether this has reached the muscular stage yet but so far, the fish has not eaten this mornings offering of PE Mysis (soaked in Selcon) and Formula One. The 'good' news is that it is currently in quarantine and also it seems quite reactive to outside stimuli at this point. Questions: Is the fish "too far gone, IYO, and if not, what would be the best starter foods for it? Thanks in advance.

I would try some fresh blended shrimp or some other meaty invert. Something that's going to smell good and intice him to feed. Maybe even something live like live mysis or brine...

I have had pretty good results feeding live brine when I can't get a fish to eat prepared foods.

How about raw mussels on the half shell from the grocery store. Also, I've heard that bloodworms can be inticing.
Other option in cyanide... hope not

Mike the good news is, being a open water species for the most part cyanide was probably not used, barrier nets yes, cyanide no. The bad news is - I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU GOT A CROSSHATCH!!! That's one of my all time favorite fish!
How's the Q tank set up? Anywho, here's what to do. Block off three sides and the bottom with something black, construction paper, old black towel, anything. Just leave one of the short ends open. Black gives them the illusion of more space, security, etc. Do you have a decent size live rock you can put in there? Do it, hiding place.
Then get live mussels or clams - clams work better - and rinse and serve them on the half shell. Don't let them stay in there more than a couple of hours and resist the temptation to peek. These fish are very visual and he'll see you coming. Keeping him dark and cool will slow down his metabolism and give you more time to work with him too. Once they discover food and associate you with it, it's all over.
Good luck and keep me posted.

I would try some live brine as well...I once had a bluejaw trigger with a sunken in belly. He would not eat. I tried some live brine and he was on it. Triggers are definitly weird. Some are Gregarious and will eat like pigs, while others are shy and will rerly comeout for feedings. What did you pay for that fish? I know they aren't cheap and I was wondering due to his condition.

Q-Tank is a 30g All Glass. Components are an Aqua-clear 150 sponge filter and a heater. I do not employ a light unless I'm specifically observing the fish. Barebottomed. Already painted flat black on three sides. Hiding places are a large (4") section of PVC and one of those free plastic plants that used to come with a bucket of IO (Don't laugh. So far, THAT'S the one she prefers).
The fish, btw, came from The Marine Center. I put in an order for a small one about six months ago. Cost was $295.
Now for the good news: She is eating!!! Tried a shredded raw shrimp/Cyclop-eeze 'combo platter' and, yes, I peeked . It seemed as if the movement of the Cyclop-eeze in the water column just worked the fish into a frenzy and before long, it simply lashed out...at the shrimp! Ravenously. Hopefully things will fare well from here.
Oh, and thanks to everyone for their suggestions and their best wishes. I will keep you posted. Finally, I suppose I should also thank my wife who coincidentally brought home the shrimp to serve a couple guests she'd invited over tonight...but since she doesn't know I've already swiped half of them , perhaps I shouldn't.

glad to hear that it is eating!
i was going to say i have had good luck getting planktivores to eat by putting live foods into the tank just at the outlet of a PH. for some reason these fish like to see prey zipping by them. it seems to get them to eat, or at least taste whatever i put in the tank. i can then experiment or wean off a particular food.
Great looking fish!
