Question

How many tangs in a 125?

I have my eye on three different tangs. Really only two, my wife wants a "Dory".

One is a Hippo tang (Regal Tang)
One is a Yellow Tang
One is a Purple Tang.

I have some hardy polyps, open brain, orange ball sponge, and mushrooms.

I currently have a Niger Trigger, a Purple Dotty back and a scooter blenny.

Want to add in addition to the tang, 2 clowns, Watchman, Foxface rabbitfiish, cleaner Wrasse, and a Royal Gramma. The corals and inverts I am looking at are Cleaner shrimp, emerald crabs, green bubble coral, Hawaiian fan, 2 sea Cucunbers, sun coral, Spaghetti Leather, and a torch.

Thoughts and experience are really appreciated.

keeping two Zebrasoma's in the same tank may be a little much. Purple tangs are a rather fiesty fish. it would need to be added last. i would only stick with 2 if i were you. the hippo and either the yellow or purple. with a foxface also you shoul have no problems with algae. tangs like loads of swimming room.

I agree with Geoff. Purple tangs are a little more agressive than the Yellow. The yellow and Hippo would be my choice.

I think the trigger would probably make a quick meal of the shrimp, and might also go after the smaller fish.

If they are small and introduced at the same time you might get away with a yellow and a hippo. Personally I would opt for only one, esp if you want to add a foxface, they are tang cousins and may or may not coexist with tang, esp if its a larger tang thats established in the tank already. My personal choice would be a sailfin, they seem to be less picky about what algaes they graze, mine would eat valonia, razor and assorted caulerpa and green fuzzy. as always thats just my opinion and your mileage may vary or suck good luck with whatever choice, if the SO wants a Dory tang, that should be an obvious answer

so do you rent out the sailfin for razor caulerpa removal.

If the cleaner shrimp are small the purple dottyback may attack or eat them

I have heard this before about the dottyback and shrimp. I have a purple dottyback in my 125, and he thinks he is king of the tank, but I have never seen him act aggressively toward either my cleaner shrimp, fire shrimp, or peppermints. The fire shrimp were pretty big when I got them, but the cleaners and peppermints were small. It's probably a matter of where the shrimp choose to call home and how bad the dottyback's attitude is.

I kept 1 purple and 1 yellow tang in a 90g along with a hippo for 3 years until I had to take my tank down because of moving. The yellow tang was first then I added the hippo and then the purple.(weeks apart) The purple and yellow tang fought for about a week and a half. This was very stressful for both fish! I almost took the purple back. They eventually settled in and did not fight at all(they flashed each other occasionally). I didnt have any problems with the hippo. Both tangs were about 2 to 3inches long. It can be done but fish can die very easily from stress when first introduced. I dont know if adding them at the same time will help, most people will advise against it.
