Fanged canary blennie question
After adding it to the tank it started to nip at my narcissus snails. The blennie also is grazin on rock which is what i figured he would do but it really seems to like them narcissus snails. Will it start on the Astra next? Also will this nippig of the snails kill them? I did a lil research about them before i got him and everyone seems to really like the fish and it is supposed to be an good reef adition according to scott michaels lil handbook :/
Any info would be appreciated

Is is nipping at the shells or the foot? The snails could have algae on their shells.

what Alice said! my foxfaces, Kole tang, and blenny have all picked at the shells of my snails. heck i have even had snails pick at the shells of other snails. as long as they are only picking at the shells then i would not worry.

Nope hmmmmm how ot xplain you know how narcissus snails have the long "nose" (for lack of a better word) the blennie hovers over the snail, darts down grabs it by that "nose" and rips it off. So far the snails seem ok they just don't have their noses

Now that's just plain wierd. Poor snails, lol. These fish need to be fed small meals often and are always on the hunt for little critters to eat in the tank. Maybe try feeding it a little bit more or more often?

do you have a pic, or know of a pic online of this blenny? i just caught the fanged part of the name. there are a group of blennies that are a rather mean bunch. they can be listed as fanged, but i have not heard of a fanged canary though. this group of blennies include the cleaner mimic, which looks like a cleaner wrasse, but just when you go to get cleaned, WHAMMO there goes a chunck of your gills. most places do not carry the fanged blennies because of their nasty habits of nipping at things.
fang blennies do not have their eyes extremely set up high and forward on the head like their veggie cousins.
sorry, for not reading more carefully the first time.

it is a Fanged blennie for sure Geoff sorry I don't have a pic cause I took him back to the LFS but if you have Scott Michael's Marine Fish pocket guide there is a pic of one on pg. 332 bottom left pic. According to this book they are "excellent" as far as reef aquarium compatibility goes :/ However after it nipped on the narcissus I was thinkin it might think the fighting conch looked good also and those (both o them) are one of my favorite inhabitents in my tank. So I thought it better this way and now i have a spotted mandarin instead. He's more reclusive but he happily picks at the lil pods and such and there are plenty for him to pick at
Thanks for the help
