X-10 Info
Ok,
I would like to replace my old appliance timers(they take up to much space). If I get 2 appliance modules(vho and fans) and 1 lamp module(MH) What do I need to control them. I can't afford anything like an Aquacontroller right now. Can I control them by programming with a desktop PC, or do I get some other type of controller. From reading I will probably need a noise filter. Right
Thanks

This is what I use http://www.smarthome.com/1100x.html It works pretty good and is inexpensive. I don't use filters and have had relatively few problems. Some ballasts even with filters will not work on X-10. I think this is limited to some Power Compacts. I just wouldn't ever recommend using X-10 for anything vital as they can malfunction. They do sell cards for your PC that can transmit X-10. I havn't had any experience with them but I would assume you would have to leave your computer running for it to work.

Don't forget to look for a lot of this stuff on EBay. I usually save about 50% off X10.com cost by finding this stuff on EBay. There are lots of folks selling new x10 equipment.

they are out there. i have many on mine setup. they are the 3-pronged, that is how thay are labeled. i do not have a catalog at hand to give you the correct number. they also make internal outlet modules. my system uses an aquacontroller and it has been great. i do have the occasional malfunction. but it corrects shortly. i do not have my main filter pump X10 controlled, just in case.
i have only lost one module, it may have been the pump itself that shorted and caused the module to go bad.
radio shack has the cheapest prices for X10 modules, other than ebay or mail order.

Mike,
What exactly is a timer controller? Would you have a link or model #? So, I can see what it looks like.

Do You only need a controller for lamp modules? Or do appliance modules need it as well.

Are the x-10 outlets preset as a lamp or appliance module. Or can the outlet style not be used for our type of lights?

I'm sure there are some stores that carry them, but it looks like its cheaper online. Check out ebay. It looks like the auctions are way cheaper.

Even after looking over those sites I'm still not sure about what timer controller you need to run these things. Maybe I'm just not seeing whats right in front of my face. Another thing is can you program them from a desktop PC?

sorry, if i came off as trying to blow you off on this. i know it is pretty confusing. i started out with just a couple of RF controllers for the stereo. i now have the aquacontroller II for the tank. i am planning on getting the IR controller to fully automate the stereo for my wife.
there are interfaces for controlling from the computer. here is a basic kit that includes the card and the interface module and software. you supply the individual modules for all of the functionality around the house. you can also get just a simple alarm clock timer controller that will turn things on and off at specific times. the possibilities are almost endless. i even controll all of the christmas lights using the aquacontroller.
i hope this helps a little. basically a conroller sends a signal through your AC house electrical system to modules telling them what state they need to be in.
