top off idea, good or bad

Well, I was sitting around thinking about my tank like most do. I have no sump, refug, wet/dry of any kind on my 90g FOWLER. I wanted a way to add my top off without just putting in a gallon at a time and possible shocking my fish. My tank is on a furnace wall and I have about 2 feet on the other side of the wall and was thinking about putting a 5g tank or plastic container on the inside of the furnace room above the main tank. I was thinking then of drilling a small hole in wall big enough for 1/2 pvc then running from the top off to tank and into one of my emperor filters. I will use a ball valve to control flow. Any ideas on this? Would it be bad to store fresh ro/di water in a container exposed to air for a top off? Should I put a lid on top of the top off to keep dust or any other stuff from entering? Am I missing anything?

Thanks,

How long can ro/di water be stored? Does it ever go bad?

Hey Jim

Just be sure you store it in sealed food grade containers. It's so pure that it will actually absorb contaminants from the air.

I have been told that if kept in a sealed container.... RO water will last for up to 6 months fresh if you keep a powerhead circulating the water. If in that time it gets stale you can place a bag of carbon in front of the powerhead to filter out the stale smell.

HTH.
