Question

Too lazy/tired to search, how to paint back of tank?

Too tired and lazy at the time to search archives (other boards would be loading flame throwers now ,,LOL) last time i painted/coated the back of a glass tank it was with "Crystal-Craze" OK, now that i dated myself,i think i want to paint the back of the 200 ,,,prob blue,,,same shade as the acrylic blue on some tanks,,,,how 'bout some tips on prepping the glass, any help on any connection to find blue in that color? clear coat it after to protect from coming off later? i remember seeing a thread of this b4,,, but i've slept since then
Tanks, oops i mean THANKS!

How about going the natural way instead of painting it. Just allow the coraline to grow on the back. Save you time and money, and if your system is good then it will happen anyway and make your painting obsolete.

A customer of mine put me on to using automobile window tinting from Pep Boys. Cost him $14 and he had tons left over which he shared with another reefer. Tints the back like smoked glass (like some Oceanic tanks have...), no muss no fuss, no toxic paint.

If you're still going to use paint, you can use latex and a roller but it will chip and peel over time.

When you choose a colour, remember that until the back of the tank encrusts with coralline, if you choose a light colour, all the algae on the back glass will look like heck. I hate light blue backs, esp. on FO tanks -- I maintain an acrylic tank with light blue back and I scrub it every other week UGH!

Black or a dark blue are very forgiving of algae on the glass

Jerel - wipes the tears from his eyes!

Jeff,

I clean it with alcohol and newspaper then just spray on Krylon. I take it you're not spraying though, right? In that case, just brush on the enamel of choice.

We have a tank in the office (Jenn cover your eyes at this point) that I sprayed on blue paint first in poofs (I mean it Jenn - cover your eyes) then sprayed it solid in black. Made sort of neat blue clouds/swirls in the black back ground.

Spanks

Oh Lord I'm all melancholy now thinking about crystal rocks, lava lamps, fiber optic things, and black light posters.

I painted my 75 with a dark blue before setting it up, cleaned with glass cleaner, the 70% isopropyl alcohol, then sprayed on the acrylic enamel, did it 2 summers ago and let it cure well for a week in the weak Oregon summer
Jerel, what are all those things you mentioned, Oh wait my grandson dug all mine out and has in his room

I'm going to use brush on black paint on the back of my 180. The black is easier to keep clean, and the colors of the corals stand out so nicely against the black. Another color to consider is midnight blue as well.

Wipe the area to paint with acetone to make sure there are no oils on the glass then paint. Window cleaner doesnt get it all clean.

I took a sheet of plastic coated freezer paper and spray painted it. I can change the color very easily.

Why would you paint it at all? Any LFS sells background things that you just tape on....hmmm *confused*

i used black contact paper on my 125...

but its a PITA to get all the bubble out...someone suggested that you can spray the glass with water and then put on the contact paper (smoothing out all the bubbles) and when the water drys the contact paper sticks...

i did a "test" on a smaller tank with a few coats of paint, and wasnt that happy with it, but i didnt clean it that well either...the acetone suggestion is a good one for cleaning...

the auto window tint is another one ive read works good too...or you could go get a piece of thin (1/8"?) black acrylic cut and hook that to the back (maybe with a bead of silicone?)...

or course im late enough on this post youve probably done something already!...

Because Jeff is wanted by every LFS in the continental US, for unpaid merchandise already delivered.

Until Home Depot catches onto him, paint is good!

Just kidding, Jeff!
