Storing LR & LS
I just tore my FOWLR set-up down because I have been having a problem with hair algae! I think it’s because of the “Lava Rock” that I used as " Base Rock"! From what I have read the lava rock is loaded with silicates! Which when tested are off the scale! Also I plan to move this fall & planed to upgrade to a “Larger Tank” anyway.
The fish went back to the LFS & the Lava Rock is in the garden!
My main question is: I now have about 60lbs of LR in a 32gal tank, & 200lbs of Southdown in another 32gal tank, both of which are plumbed into a third 32gal sump. I’m looking for any ideas on how to just store the LR & LS until this fall? What would be the minimum lighting, SG, Temp, Etc, required? Also what type of additives other than Ca should I use? What & when should I feed the LR & LS?

Well from what I have read about other people's opinion on storage of LR and LS is this:
The LS you are better just giving it to area reefers or sell it to them and start over with clean sand and re-seed it when you start your next tank.
As far as LR goes, you can take three part water to one part bleach and scrub your live rock and then put it in the sun to dry real good and then store it! Get some quality show piece LR when you start up your new tank and put it on top of this rock and it will re seed all of it!

Thats what I did, discarded the sand (tank wasn't mature enough to give away sand) and dried out the LR and I'm storing it in a large rubermaid container in my basement. Didn't bleach it though.

Interesting! I had thought that it would be better to try to keep it in a small tank with a PH & heater with just minimal lighting? If I did what has been suggested I would loose all the coralline & life that is on the LR! That would be a shame to kill off all the good coralline

Store it in a rubbermaid container, use a couple of NO Flouresent lights, a powerhead, weekly 10% water change and skimmer if desired. You will need to keep the water warm somehow. I wouldn't recomend a heater in the rubbermaid unless you attach it to the rock away from the sides of the container. Be careful of the lights and heater in the rubbermaid. There will be some coraline die off but it will keep the rock "alive". When do you plan on using this rock again? I think the other suggestions are if you plan on storing it for a long time.

Ok maybe I did not explain what I plan to do that good! a couple of pic might help! This is what I have set-up! I plan to just keep the LR & LS “Alive” until this fall! I will be doing a lot of traveling between MI & OH until this fall. Then I will be getting a larger tank (120~150gal) As I plan to move. Because there’s no fish or inverts in there would I need to feed it anything? And if so how much & how often? I will still do a water change every several weeks & it will be hooked up to a RO/DI for auto top-off! I just won’t have the time to maintain it like a reef tank until this fall when I plan to move! Pic's are a little fuzzy because of the sandstorm!

I just stored the LR in salt water and a PH but no heater. Didn't take too long after it was in the tank, that life took off slow but still life. JMO- don't dry it, but do scrub it of the algae.

Here’s a better pic! I cleaned & rearranged the LR and the sandstorm has settled down! I almost want to add a couple of fish to it! But I know that I won’t have the time to feed them! Like I stated before all I want to do is keep the LR & LS "Alive" until this fall!

Can't you just leave it up with no livestock?

I would just leave it in the tank you have it in. Disconnect and drain the sump. Put a small powerhead to ciculate the water and put a NO 50/50 flouresent light over it running 8-12 hours /day. I would 86 the auto topoff, since you won't be able to monitor for failures. Check the water level every week or so to keep a semi stable salt concentration.

I'd also feed some phyto a couple of times a week to keep the critters alive.
