65 Gallons with 320 Watts over it = 4.9 watts per gallon. A lot of experienced people will tell you that watts per gallon is NOT a good measurement. However, for those of us who are just learning, it is a pretty darned good way to see how you measure up. I have 5.5/G over my tank. I have happy leathers, shrooms, xenia, and other softies. I also have LPS, SPS and clams. You just need to kow the specific needs of the coral and place them where they need to be. Some folks told me that I couldn't keep clams or SPS. However, mine are actually showing full polyp or healthy mantle and have shown calc growth under my lighting. They are placed up high on my "reef".

Are you planning on using VHO, NO, or PC lights? PC are wonderful IMHO.

FYI - From what I have heard - VHO are just as "hot" as MH. I would try to stick to PC if you are concerned about heat being an issue.

First Welcome, I am just now jumping on this thread . I wold recomend VHO just because of the variations that you can do wiit it. Have you looked in the paper for used systems? often time one can find a good deal on a used tank, just asked if they have used any medicine or copper in the tank. You might be able to get live rock from www.marinedepot.com to you cheaper, they may not have to over night the shipping. As far as heat goes, I have heard many people just turn their air conditioners down a little bit more .

HTH

I have been looking at used system, it is a much more better deal than buying new but beside tank stand and hood I feel much better buying all the filtration system new.
