Self-rotating powerheads...do they work?
Has anyone used a self-rotating powerhead to break up linear flow, such as the Zoo-Med (Eden) PowerSweep Self-Rotating Power Heads?
Do they work?
Are they durable?
Which brands are best?
Thanks in advance.

Common feedback that I've seen has been that the powersweeps don't keep rotating for more than a few weeks...

I've got a powersweep 210 that has been running for a couple of months now. No problems so far. Provides a nice alternating flow. Don't know about long term durability yet.

I've had a couple of the Zoo-med's for a few years now. They stopped rotating after a few weeks, but still function now as normal powerheads. I think the trick might be to clean them in and out VERY often to keep any buildup from blocking the rotation.

My rotating ph worked for about 5 months ,and completely died at about 8 .I can not remember the brand.I think they are a good idea if they last.

My zoo med will rotate for only a couple of weeks.I always have to clean it to make sure it works. The pump itself has been working fine.

Mine worked for about 24 hours. Don't waste your money.

Great, now you tell me!!!
Sure wish I had seen a thread like this a few months ago. I bought a sweeping PH. It's about 60 days into life in my reef. Looks like at best it has another 2 -3 months. Is it just the rotation that quits or are they all just DOA after a couple of months.

Just the rotation quits and you're left with a weak powerhead. FWIW a few Maxi-Jets on a Wavemaster Pro is a good setup.

I agree. I have a few powersweeps and they have never worked well. I use a Wave master pro with Maxijets and get better results than I would with rotating powerheads.
