Rio2500 Failure

Well, add me to the list of those who have sworn off Rio pumps. A little over a year ago I got a Turbofloater skimmer that came with a Rio2500.
It was fine for a while, except it didn't like to restart after a power failure or when I shut down the system to clean the pumps.
Last night I cleaned the pump as I found the pump not running for no apparent reason. Tonight I noticed "snow" in my tank & sure enough, the skimmer wasn't running again. I took the pump apart & it has that unmistakable smell of an electrical device on the verge of frying.
I just did a search on this skimmer to see what other pumps people may have used on it & I found a lot of warnings about this particular pump melting down & causing tanks to crash. I think I just got REALLY lucky!!!
I am thinking of going with either a Mag or Sen pump (I use a Mag1200 as my return pump & I have never even had to think about it not working right) this time, just have to decide which size to use.
By the way, does anyone else notice "dust" or "snow" in their tanks if their skimmer is not running? My water parameters are great, but one day of no skimmer makes it go from very clear to this snowy look. Thanks for any input.

The replacement pump (which just came out not too long ago) for the TurboFloater is the "Ocean Runner". This pump is available with the connections to hook it up to the Turbofloater and the needle wheel impeller. They are suppose to work really well and I would check "Premium Aquatics" or "Marine Depot". I think they are around $60 or so.

HTH

Okey Dokey! We hardly made it out of Dodge over Christmas...we did make it to New Pal and saw Bob and Drew's tank! Really nice! And it was great seeing Drew (Dipstick) again, too!

Yes, we will get the wagon hitched to the horses, or the dogs to the sled, and make the journey north...

Hi John,

Though I got rid of the Rio in my Bak Pac a couple of years ago, there are times that it gets gummed up. But the MJ works farrrrr better than the Rio. I use the Rio to make up new SW.

Snowy stuff in your water? Lately I've been seeing odd things float on the top of my water. Is that what you mean?

BTW...i want one of those handshakes too

WOW! I guess I am walking a tight rope as I have a RIO 2500 for circulation in my tank and have had it for over a two years! Maybe that is why I am in physically bad shape because of the stress of having a RIO!!!
