Newbie
Hey All.... Just wanted to say Hi and thank this great board for the information I've already gleaned. I'm new to reefing as of a week ago.
I have a 75 gallon tank with live rock, in the infant stages, aragonite, mushrooms, 1 branded shrimp, 1 green brittle star, and my star pupil, an Australian Sailfin. And an unwanted guest, brown diatom growth which has spread quickly in the last few days. I understand that the diatom growth is normal at this stage of my tank but I don't like it anyway.
This is my first endeavor into the Marine environment and I hope to make it a long and successfuly one. I plan to check the message board daily and hopefully educate myself. I do have a friend who is a very good mentor, but I like many opinions and suggestions to my queries.
I'll do my best to read the FAQ's, but I may post a query which has been answered many times, so forgive me in advance.
Thanks again for the great board!!

Hey Sailfin!
Not to worry too much about asking something that someone has already asked. It just gives others a chance to answer.
Hey, do you know RickO in Marietta? He's involved in a neat reef society down your way. Rick is a great guy, and ready to help.

Hi Sailfin,

Good to have you with us!! We've got several members in your area and Atlanta has a reef club.
Good choice with the 75.....that's an almost ideal size for a first tank....notice I said " first"!
Ask away with your questions or comments; that's why we are here.
Again, Welcome to TRT!

Thanks for the welcome..
Thanks for the welcome Drew and Horge.
I'm afraid I'm already sucked into my tank. Besides my wife, it's the last think I look at before I go to bed at night, and the first thing I look at in the morning.

Sorry Cath, don't know RickO in Marietta. I noticed you are in Spartanburg. Was just there a month ago for the BMW Z3 Homecoming event. Great part of the State.
And thanks Dick, for the welcome..

Hi Sailfin.
Welcome to The Reef Tank. We're fortunate to have a very active reef club in Atlanta. Our next meeting is tomorrow (Tuesday) night in Alpharetta. We're very informal and there are no membership dues. You can get more info here.
Hope you can make it.

Welcome Sailfin!!
Glad to have you here
Just curious, did you tank cycle for a while first before you added the critters in your tank? Diatoms are usually the first " algae stage" a tank will go through during cycling and if your tank is not cycled yet, you may be in for some trouble.
Ask away, we're here to help!
Alice

Hey Alice.... The rock from my LFS was already very well cleaned. In fact the rock had already had some starts of the good Coralline purple algae. After the addition of my RO/DI water, I had the water tested at the LFS. It looked really good, PH, nitrates, salanity, and dKH is over 10. The Coralline is still spreading aggressively and I'm told that it should help eliminate the brown diatom.
Soooooo.... I hope the tank is relatively stable at this point but I don't plan to add any additional critters, beyond some crabs, until the brown stuff is significantly reduced.
Thanks for your concern and I'll keep you updated.

Welcome Peter!!
Everybody else beat me to it, but I'd like to invite you to the Atlanta Reef Club, meeting tomorrow night right in your neighbourhood! Rick O posted the link...we're usually 15 or so people and we discuss a bit of club business, then we have informal discussion and frag and equipment trading! It's always a good time, and we always learn! Best of all it's FREE!
Hope to see you there!
The ARC also has a message forum like this at: http://www.reefcentral.com/vbulletin...php?forumid=49
All us "locals" post there too!
We've also got a field trip to Chattanooga, TN coming up on the 28th, to Captive Bred Corals there....should be a great time!
Hope you'll join us

Thanks Jenn for the welcome and the info for tonight's meeting. I'll do my best to make the next meeting and I'll keep my eye on both boards if I can.
