Question

Just curious about your substrate....

I, like a lot of people, "jump-started" my substrate with live sand and with a "critter kit"; I'm wondering if there's anyone on the board that did not use these and just used the live-rock to seed the sandbed. I'm curious as to what kind of critters and the density of the population you have in the substrate.

My tank is now about 8 mos old, maybe 9 mos old. I let the live rock seed the substrate (crushed coral not sand). I have all sorts of neat new stuff in there now! I have feather dusters everywhere! I've just now started noticing bristle worms, I see little wormy type things. My substrate looks very similar to what I see at my LFS.

I too let the LR seed the sand bed. I have Carib-Sea Florida crushed coral. Since I have been feeding my tank with Tahitian Blend, DT's, and Golden Pearls I have had an explosion of life in my sandbed.

Hello Alice,

I didn't seed my sand either. My tank is about 6 months old now. I had a fair amount of pods and worms early on, but have had a population EXPLOSION in the last few weeks. I was looking in the tank at night with a flashlight recently and there were literally thousands of pods covering the sand. Looked like teenagers at the mall food court! (No offense to teenagers)

There are pods, some small worms, tiny tiny snails, have seen a couple bristle worms, and what could be brittle stars?

Regards

Hi Alice! I used my LR to seed my sand...so far I have seen teeny tiny brown shelled snails, tiny white worms, red worms, tons of worm trails in the sand, bristle worms, white bristle stars (introduced by me) and lots of very small pods, and the larger "sand flea" type pods.

Took awhile for the sand to get this way...and I do get "sheets" of diatoms over the top of the sand, but the small snails and the large brown brittle star seem to have them cleared up every morning when I get up.

I got a little bit of LS with the first LR that TDW gave me. But my major LR purchase (20 lbs in late July, 2000) started things going. At this point my tank is teeming with critters of many sizes, some of which I don't want (re: Crabzilla and Sea Slugs). But also baby snails that are actually growing past the infant stage.

btw...Tom mention the Golden Pearls to me today. I'd like to know more about that and Tahitian Blend too. Comments, anyone?
