Question

evaporation rate

Just wondering about this. Water in my 29 seems to evaporate at the rate of 1/2 gal per day. I've got 2 PH, a CPR BakPak 2R protein skimmer, a HOB filter. Also have 2x55 W PC, with one actinic. Does this rate of evaporation seem right?

Thanks for your comments

Hi Cath,

You will find that the rate of evaporation will change throughout the year. Remember that the more evaporation you have the cooler your water will be. Do you have any fans for your lights? If so this will increase the rate of evaporation. Also you may want to turn any fans off (or reduce the time they're on) during cooler days so that you're not using electricity to heat AND cool the water. HTH.

Tanks, guys! I appreciate your input. Rick, thanks for the reminder about evaporation/cooling, etc. Leave it to an HVAC man to bring that information out. As a matter of fact, the other night my tank registered 91º The only thing I can figure is that something overheated, because now that I've cleaned the PHs and so forth, the temp is back to hovering around 82º. I am thinking about fans, tho, so your comments, Rick are especially timely. I'll prolly have to make winter adjustments anyway, since the shade that my maple tree affords my tank in the summer will be absent from November to May. (duh, cath) (Though my tank is not near the window.) Anyway...the whole thing is an ever-changing environment, and I'm loving it!

Bill I have found just over 1% to be pretty close My 1500 US gallon 16 tank propagation system loses 13 US gallons during lighting period and at present 6.5 gallons when not lit over night.
I will have air conditioning soon and it will be interesting what the evaporation rate is then.
my biggest bug bear is the amount of moisture over night every thing is wet when I go in there in the morning I am hoping the air conditiong will help.
and maybe some type of ventalation in the roof tiles.
I have an extractor fan but it has to be turned off at 11pm as next door niegbours fined it keeps them awake.
