I responded to your post but was not much help, I'm afraid.

Things are just a little slow around here on Saturday nights

Tim -

What books have you read concerning marine aquariums and reef keeping? If you have not done so, I suggest Robert Fenner's "Concientious Marine Aquarist," John Tullock's Natural Reef Aquariums" and of course Julien Sprung's books. You will find that not just any old rock will serve as live rock, many have metals and minerals in them that just won't work.

As far as the Helios lights, I think they are just PCs - is that what you need for what you want to do? The ones I looked at looked slick but I am not sure how good they will be in the long run.

Hope this helps.

Hey Tim! First of all there is no such thing as a dumb question on this board! We love to answer any question as we know it is part of the learning process!
Many years ago I used lava rock in my saltwater tank as it was free of any metals which would do harm to my tank. Have you talked to your LFS about using various types of rock?
If you are wanting to put other rock in your tank to save on cost----it may cost you dearly in the long run!
Reading as suggested in earlier posting is an excellent way to determine what rock you will put in your aquarium. Most hobbyist use Fiji, Marshalls, Tonga branch, etc in their reef set-up.
If your tank is large you can buy base rock for the bottom and add show type or premium grade Live rock for topping off your reef. HTH Johnny

Tim, I have heard of a few reefers out there using tuffa rock to supplement their live rock. It is very pourous and will also get colonized by the creatures that will be on your "live" rock. You just need to get enough live rock to seed the tuffa though. I would probably just by all live rock though. You might save a little $$$ up front but I would just buy good quality live rock, then at least you know what you are getting... (JMO)
