DT's Phytoplankton question

I have a bottle of DT's which I'm using, which expired in Jan 2003. The bottle says: Dead pytoplankton will have a strong foul odor and should not be used.

Mine is expired but smells very slightly like a "fishy" smell.

Should I discontinue? continue?

I've been using with no apparent problems, just wondering what you'll would do

I am one that usually won't go beyond an expiration date on anything for the most part!! I imagine if there is no foul smell, it probably is ok but would not go much longer in my opinion!

That casey dude is a really funny guy at times! What he meant by "marine snow" was:
""Marine snow" is an aggregate of bacterial and particulate detritus that are agglutinated on/around a sticky molecule such as mucus." Right casey?

at the very least it has lost its nutritional value, and therefore would be pretty useless to use, you'll only be adding excess nutrients. I would throw it out

Before I was using DT's live stuff, I was using Kent's dead stuff. I assume if it doesn't smell, it may be OK to use or may be not even dea either. BTW, dead is not as good as live per DT.

Thanks, everyone. Well at least it's only about 1/4 bottle, so I wont feel that bad throwing it out. Maybe I should dose a capful more often...right now I'm only doing a capful every wed and sunday.

Easy for you to say Johnny!
i get DT's from a couple of places,,,one place i gotta watch tho, a fellow reefer said they tried to sell him a bottle that was EXPIRED already!
reminds me of a time when i worked at a lil grocery store in high school,,they told me "never put the oldest milk in the front row,put it in the second ",,,,sure enuf, everyone took their milk from the second row, never the front,,,knowing that, i check the date on the milk since then

Grow your own. Use some of the bottle to try to grow your own phyto. If it's alive it will work and you'll never have to buy DTs again and you'll have an endless supply of phyto.

Go to the Culturing Live Food section. Works great and your reef will love it.
