Cleaning up a used tank
Hey all,yet another question on the 200 ,,,got it in the other side of the garage(heated) on a rolling platform, was wondering what to use to remove the lil bit of crud around the edges. it was a FW tank only b4, and it has a little bit of crud on the frame and at the top of the glass on the inside.i tried vinegar, and a razor blade, but still have more to remove to make me happy. sent the wife on her way to work to stop at the LFS to pick up what they might have to remove the grunge(mineral deposits) anything out the in the trade that works? or any other tips to get the stuff off and clean up the tank? Thanks!

THe only thing that I know works besides a razor blade is some good hard elbow grease and maybe a soft or flexable glass pad that you can use to scrubb with. HTH

Yup Jon,thats what i figger,,,, now that i'm on the young side of 44, i was looking for a easier (lazy) way to do it.
had my wife "help" me moving the 200 from one stall of the 3 car to the other end(partitioned off/heated workshop) i had her keep the castered platform steady while i put the 200 on it to roll over.
she said ,"why don't i get on the other end , and we can both pick it up and put it on?" told her YOU are not gonna pick up the end o the tank, it took two guys to get it in the truck and off into the garage, then she said ," and you are gonna pick it up , MR. 2years out of spinal fusion surgery?" it told her i work smart, not hard,,,,then i got the "yah right" look from her
wanna come over and show me what kind o elbow grease you use? LOL
gotta go , got to go back and de-mineralize a big cube of glass,,,,

you could try a scraper. same thing as the razor but gives you more leverage.

This may sound a little harsh but you might want to try a weak solution of muratic acid.. Be sure and wear rubber gloves and work in a well ventilated area..

I agree with Bill, but USE GLOVES and Ventilation, you might try CLR stuff first

Thanks folks, the build -up is not that bad to warrant heavy artillery, don't want to use chemicals , only to find out they gave me trouble with the tank later on,,, i did use a lil bit of a cleaner i/my wife use on our glass stove top,,, a bit abrasive, but does not scratch, think i'm gonna , scrape/pick away at this ,,,,just want to have the tank look as new as i can b4 i put it in use,,,
Thanks

Jeff,
Since it was FW, do you know if they treated in-tank with copper or any kind of meds? If you're not sure, muracic acid and rinse, rinse, rinse may avoid problems down the road. Adsorbtion by the glass and all that.

Wouldn't hurt to fill the tank (after cleaning and rinsing and drying) with RO water and testing for copper. You may think this a bit lavish, but if it tests positive for copper after a day of soaking in RO, you definiely want to rethink using this tank for reef. This will not absolutely guarantee that there is not some chelated complex at the glass surface, but if the water column tests clear, it is a good sign, prolly safe to use for reef critters.

If you go with muriatic (Hydrochloric Hcl) acid I'd recommend a rinse with baking soda to neutralize it..

ok when i cleaned my fresh water tank it had a lot of water stains on the inside. I tried everything to clean this finely gave up and said to hell with it and got out the steel whool and some windex. Suprizingly i had no scrtaches and no water staines left. might be extreme but if i face this problem again i will do the same thing no hestiation.

Jeff,
I just finished an IM with Troy about your tank situation. Would you like a copy of the transcript posted?
