Carbon to filter air not water
With all the great carbon debates a while back, did anyone ever decide on a good carbon to filter air? I've been using Black Diamond, just because it's handy.
I built a air filter for the intake on the Becket.
What do you guys think?

On a serious note, will the carbon absorb harmful gasses to enough extent to actually be beneficial? Also what are you trying to filter out of the air, anything in particular or just all around safety measure?
I haven't had coffee yet this morning...

D. LOL of course - it's my job!
I just figured that becket is pulling a lot of air, and putting it right in the skimmer. Soooo, I built a in-line air filter out of 2" PVC. Packed each end with filter fluff and carbon in the middle. Figured it couldn't hurt.
I was wondering if there's a cheaper/better carbon for filtering air.

Hey Spanky,
You gave me the Idea about the carbon air intake filter on the beckett. I just used 1.5".
I also am using cheap wally world carbon, I think it's called Reagent.
I am in the process of building an air filter for the exhaust air coming out of the waste collector. It should help with the recirculating of the skimmate funk.
When I get it figured out I'll show ya how I did it.
If that doesn't work then I'm just gonna run some tubing to exhaust the fumes outside.

Hmmmmm.
Have you been taking Greg's cold meds??
Well-l, if we're going to worry about the air that skimmers intake, what about the gas exchange at the surface of the tank? Is that any different??
I need coffee.

Depends how yore you mean....LOL I remember yeras ago that carbon comparisons were all the rage in all the magazines...
I think carbon is carbon is carbon right? ::shrug::
Interesting concept.....Jerel. I know on my skimmers, I use a cotton ball in the silencer and when I clean the skimmer the cotton is filthy where it is sucking in all that air.....so it does make sense. If the cotton is getting gunked up then without anything it has to be pulling in other things.....that you may not want in your system, but at least the skimmer might pull it back out...right?

You funny!
One thing to keep in mind. Jorge is constantly burning stuff in the kitchen, he calls it dinner. I figured the least I could do is try to clean some of that out before it hits the becket/skimmer. First thing I noticed, the skimmer doesn't shut down at dinner time anymore.
Andy, it's easy. Just put a threaded nipple on the becket intake. Hose to the filter.
Waa Laa - clean air.

How about using some of the filter material they put in air cleaners? It might have smaller openings than the filter poly you are using and trap more particulates. Carbon I wouldn't know about.
