100%silicone vs 100% aquarium silicone??
What is the difference between the two? I am building a new sump for my tank and the aquarium silicone adds up quike! The DAP 100% silicone says it is safe for food contact. Thanks

ReefJunkie, they are essentially the same thing. We use 100% silicone from Home Depot in caulking guns rather than "aquarium silicone". 100% silicone is perfectly safe.
Cheers,
Chris

A lot of the silicone products out theere contain fungicides and stuff like that, usually says so tho not always stated plainly. If its claimed food safe it will prolly do for aquarium use, most silicones that are additive free may have a lawyer induced disclaimer regarding aquarium use because they dont want to be sued if Nigel Newby decided to build the cheap 100 gallon tank out of recycled window glass and uses their silicone. It can get confusing tho, the stuff specifically for tank use is spendy, even Walmart is now selling "All Glass" silicone in small tubes for twice what the old product sold for. If anyone has specific names and part numbers of silicone in caulk gun sized tubes, please share

Doug, we use GE "Window and Door 100% Silicone Sealant". The stock number for the clear sealant in a caulking gun-compatible tube (10.1 fl. oz.) is "GE5000".
If the product says 100% silicone and food safe, it will not have any fungicides or additives (some may even specifically indicate that they are not mildew resistant). Most silicones in caulking gun sized tubes that contain the additives Doug mentioned will not say 100% silicone (because they aren't) or will be named something different entirely.
Cheers,
Chris

I believe the real difference is the acid it generates while curing. Aquarium silicone uses acetic acid for curing, some of the other types use a different curing method, I believe.
So any silicone which states it has an acetic acid by-product should be safe.
