Goniopora indeed.
The longest captivity I heard of is 2 years 11 months.

It was an unwanted hitchhiker in a mangrove setup, down at this joint near Silliman University, here in the Philippines. When the grant ran nearly out, they dismantled the system, tossed all the coral into the sea, and used the remaining funds to buy a truckload of Mandy Moore CD's and videos, and premiere tickets to Star Wars: Episode I.

Mandy Moore is still extremely popular here (not as trashy as some other female pop singers), among the old and the young.
George Lucas on the other hand, has since lost all cred.

Ah yes, the gonio...
Exceedingly filthy reservoir's overflow (back to the mangrove tank proper) is where it was located. Natural sunlight, and (horge does some rough mental conversion) about 80 deg. F is all I know. No feeding. The reservoir was chock full of ascidians, small molluscs and tunicates, so maybe their larvae were feeding the Gonio.

You can maybe look ub Rob Toonen for his opinion on Gonio husbandry. Personally I think they should NOT be sold.

A aquatance of mine in Port Angeles wa had one for over 2 years, growing and healthy. It put off babies also. He used ozone and a redox controller. 80gal with 10g a week water change. Flourescent VHO and Actinic HO at the time. His nitrate count was usally around 10ppm, he used biopads & carbon. This was about 8 years ago and I have not been in contact with him since I moved out of town. I think it was the high redox and particle free water that the flowerpot liked. He fed the tank everyday frozen fish food, not sure what type.

The flowerpot would sit on the bottom of the tank the bulb part was about as big as your fist, but the thing would stretch out almost to the top of the tank. Truely an amazing site. Would like to know if he still has it

All of the people I have talked to said they do better in lower light. But I have also heard they seem to like dirtier water. Guess they must be wrong with what your friend did. That is really amazing. Whatever it takes to make those things do good is really a secret. If they just lived they would be the most popular coral.

Interesting about the dirty water, since my friend always had 10+ nitrate count, I would say that may be considered dirty. He also only had 2 vho white and 2 ho actinics on his tank, low light by todays standard.

Ive had that one in the picture for about 6 months, it seems to be thriving, my nitrates are around 10, and there are some phosphates i my water, but im using 4-110VHOs in a 30 gal and the tank does receive some natural sunlight. Like i said so far its thriving.

I have had the regular green goniopora for about 6 months now with success, and they have a 3 on the hardy scale in 'Corals: A Quick Reference Guide (Oceanographic Series)
by Julian Sprung' I recently purchased a red goniopora the same as pictured above, and this book gives it an 8 in the heardyness scale. We shall see...
