Need Calcium Help Bad

Have a 155 with 30 gal ref and 20 gal sump. Have 9 watts a gallon in lighting using MH and VHO’s. A mix of hard, soft, SPS corals and 4” LSB. Kalkwasser reactor inline on the top off tank and TF300a skimmer

Tonight readings

1. Alk 3
2. Ca 300
3. PH 7.9
4. Mg 1375

Posted a week ago about calcium problem falling so started using a two component supplement (Kent Tech-CB) because replies to the post were imbalances between Alk & Ca.

Calcium bounced up and down some what between 325 and 350. The other day it was up to 400 now tonight it’s down to 300 and the PH is taking a dive as well.

Increased the evaporation rate by putting fans on sump and increase the kalk drip to run 1.5 hours longer than before.

What am I doing wrong here?

Note: The Ca went to 400 the day after I use several scoops of Marin Tropic BioCal.

that is really strange. my 180 varies very little from day to day. i'm not a chemist but your readings seem unreasonable to me. could it be your test procedure or kits? i use the salifert tests and usually my varience is < .4 dKH, 0.0 pH and 20ppm CA between tests and i don't usually do them even weekly. i do all my testing at exactly the same time of night.

this is the best link that i've seen describing CA/alk relationship:

http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu.../chemistry.htm

if you are sure your tests are good, i would suggest you do the following:

1) do a series of large water changes to get your system back in balance. 30-40% 2 or 3 times.

2) do all of your tests at the same time.

3) use only kalkwasser, c-balance, bionic or a calc reactor to get you where you need to be.

4) don't add too much at a time.

5) make sure you are at full strength 35 ppt saltwater.

i'm trying to get my ca up as well. added a calc reactor a few weeks ago and am still dosing bionic and kalkwasser. my pH is always 8.4, ca is at 340 (going up 20 ppm/week) and alk is at 6.4 dKH.

good luck!

Having you been regularly checking the PH since you increased the evaporation rate. Perhaps gets to high then precipitates now making havok......

I had the same problem when I used the Kent. I found skipping 2 days or so actually reset the system. Daily doses of the Kent seemed to overload the system and have a negative impact. Calcium and ph drop and kh climbs.

Since, I have switched to B-Ionic from ESV. I found it to be a much more stable and predictable. Once I stopped using the Kent, my system seemed to stabalize.

Not sure what your temp is, but I brought mine down a couple degrees from 79-80 to 76-77 and that also seemed to help.

Thanks everyone

Have PH monitor on it 24/7 and the tank temp stays at 77.

Bought some SeaChem Calcium Complete. Have not started using it yet.
