Initial Water for 190 Tank

I am in the process of plumbing and filling (for the first time) a 190 gallon tank. I have a 4-stage RO/DI unit from Aquatic Reef Systems (outstanding unit, I strongly recommend it) that I plan on using to make top-off water. But the sheer amount of water that would be wasted if I used an RO/DI unit to make the first 200-220 gallons of water (accounting for the sump) is more than a little worrisome. [I don't have the facilities to save the "waste water."]

I was wondering whether anyone has tried using the Tap Water Filter (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...=6&pCatId=4484) to make water for their reef tank. I realize that I will need to get a couple of extra refill catridges but I think the savings in terms of wasting water (and not taking 2-3 days to fill the tank) may be worth it I plan on using it just for the initial water and then to have as a backup device.

Are there any concerns or problems with using just DI water for the initial set up?

Thanks.

K.M.

Hi there! I use one of those units for top-off water and replace the cartridge usually after 50 gallons of water. Usually you see a brown ring forming in the tube and very good sign to replace your cartridge.

Johnny:

Thanks for the information. Sounds like I can go ahead with the plan to use the Tap Water Filter to make the initial water for the tank. Cool!

have you checked with your LFS? they can sell you either made-up water or RO/DI water.
