Question

"Cold Sterile Filtering" alternative to RO?

I'm looking for an alternative to RO filtration on my brother's behalf. He has well water that is high in iron, calcium and a bunch of other stuff. A guy at his LFS mentioned the use of "cold sterile filtering" as an alternative that doesn't produce as much waste water (he doesn't want to run his well dry by using an RO). Anybody have any info on this, or where to find out more? Thanks!

Before using a Cold sterile, you need to send a water analysis chart to them. Agu ( reef central handle ) bought one and there was an additive the city put into the water that destroyed the filters in very short amount of time. Their answer was you didn't consult with us first, Manufacturer solution was to add some chemical to the water before running it through the filter to keep it from destroying which would be a pain and not an acceptable solution. If it weren't for Premium Aquatics customer services he would have been stuck with it.

Sorry I can't be more specific as I don't remember the exact elements. Be careful, do your homework.

If this is well water then this will likely not be a problem.

We use that system on our well water, it works fairly well. Here is a link to the manifactures web site. http://www.poly-bio-marine.com You can buy the units from them or from http://www.reefsplendor.com.

Cool

Run his well dry? Either he has a huge tank to fill or his well is much smaller than I would have imagined. Maintaining my 58 and 90 with RO/DI water has not added that many gallons to my waterbill. I hit a higher bump watering the grass.

On a usefull note an old member of our club used a cold sterile to maintain his tanks. He was happy with it, then the lucky bas@#$d moved to Hawaii.

Paul thier are lots of little tricks to keeping the waste water down. You can use a permeate pump, this will knock the waste water down quite a bit. He could also run the waste water line back to the well, that way he doesnt loose anything.

What the permeate pump? I'm interested in reducing the amount of waste water from my RO/DI...
