Trocus Snails

Hi Everyone!

I was wondering if anyone else has had the experience that I had in my reef tank last night? Just after the lights went down I walked past the tank (75 gal), and noticed that the water was very cloudy (the tank has been doing real well). Worry became surprise when I noticed that the majority of my trocus snails had perched themselves on a point of rock on the reef and were in the process of ejecting clouds of a milky white substance from their upraised bodies. I decided that there was a party going on in my tank and it went on for aprox. 15 - 20 min. more. It did not seem to effect the rest of the tank mates so I just left it as was. Any comments?

Sounds like you have had a spawning event
Trochus are one of the snails that frequently breed in aquariums so hopefully you will be seeing lots of little snails. Watch for egg cases to make an appearance. I havent had mine in long enough to figure out what they are doing yet

Sounds like yours just haven't had their "housewarming party" yet Doug!

Hi Doug!
Thanks for the reply. I will let you know what happens in the next few weeks with the snails. Who knows, maybe I'll have to start passing out cigars!!!! It will be interesting to see where eggs/snails start showing up at(if at all).

Jody,
I've had Tiger Trochus babies grow to adults in my 55!
I seem to always have a bunch of little ones but only a few make it all the way. Keep us posted.

Hellooooo from the Rockies!

Good news tonight. I have discovered what appears to be an egg casing (clear) with "things (white) - ie. baby trocus snails?", aprox. the size of a half dollar on the side glass of my tank. Funny, I did not see it before today but am looking for more. I will keep you posted on how things go. So sad, I do not have a digital camera to post a picture for you. By the way, if I did how would I go about posting a picture with my message?
