Speaking of Bare Bottoms.

This is a pic I took today at the lab of one of the Florida Keys reef displays I curate. The display/exhibit is in the public aquarium attached to the lab.

The system is 175 gallons and the display aquarium is 135. Dimensions are 36" x 36" by 24".

Life support is provided by a 60" tall self built eductor skimmer, Gulf aquacultured live rock, a Lifegard prefiltered 40 watt UV sterilizer run at approximately 100,000 microwatts. Flowrate through life support loop is approximately 960 gph (UV flowrate is bypassed and much lower to maximize microwattage).

Calcium and alkalinity are maintained by a Knop HD calcium reactor, run at full bore by an Aquarium Systems microjet powerhead (gotta keep up with those darn weeds).

Lighting is a single 400 watt Iwasaki DL bulb manually diffused by me depending on the coral.

Flow/circulation loop is run at 1440 GPH full throttle (Iwaki 70RT). In other words, if any sand were in that tank it would fly like superman after an evening with Jose Cuervo.

Species of coral visible in this photo include:

Acropora cervicornis
Diploria labyrinthiformis
Montastrea cavernosa
Erythropodium caribaeorum
Briarium asbestinum
Colpophyllia natans
Porites porites
Discosoma sanctithomae
Stephanocoena melchinii

Nice looking tank. Similar to my 170, but different dimensions. Any bracing on top Chris? Is it glass?

Hey Doug,

Yep, after our recent experiments, we refer to the the big pumps as sandbed kryptonite

and Hey Doug,

It is glass, custom made. I noticed there was an error in the dimensions and edited it. The tank is 24" tall. No bracing

Steve, straight Instant Ocean with RO/DI. Have been using it on these corals since I started curating them about 4 years ago.

So you're saying they are used to the metals.

I'll bet all of his snails and urchin larvae are dead.

Absolutely. Most of that rock is probably 7 years old, so I'm sure its loaded with it and leaching it back into the water like a cow going on a flat rock.

Come to think of it....

You know, I used to have some longspines (they have since moved into a dedicated urchin exhibit). I wondered every day why they weren't making more .

EDIT
FOR ANYONE THAT DOESN'T KNOW, DOUG'S A URCHIN!

Oh yeah, didn't I mention, these were Juvenile longspines

Jerel, so far I haven't had to deal with anything spawning, but I don't cycle water temps or feeding yet. When I'm ready (set up-wise) I might try it.
