SO when people ask you what a coral is......

....what to you tell them?

My first expereince with this was in dealing w/ a fedex claim agent on a missing box of acropora....and I was at a total loss for words when it cam to describing the contents...plant? animal?, etc...gotta keep it simple

Curious to hear how you would describe it:-) ..and how you answer determines how it mighty fly?

one could strech it as a bio haz if it should die if they lost it.

i end up showing pictures on my computer of what i have to the people i work with in the lab so they know what i am talking about.
one girl said she is now going to start a SW tank now!!!

i would mark it as live animal.. pay the extra price for it.

Why is it that so many adults can't get past the idea that corals are pretty sea plants? Then again I know a 10 yr old that can pronounce cnidarian

Thats what i reckon!

They are just submersed plants, but a whole lot prettier.
Ikeep my gardens in my house, and they are inhabited by these great looking critters, who have really bright colours, and swim instead of fly or crawl...

little steps...

I am going to my 8 y/o step-daughter's class once every few weeks to talk about cnidarians (one of their spelling words this week!). They know they are bags with an inner skin and an outer skin, mouth and tentacles, that some make skeletons and sit right side up, and some don't make skeletons and float upside down (jellyfishes), and that little plant cells live in their bodies to make dinner for the colony...

They have seen skeletons from each representative of the different morphologies of hermatypic corals, and know that sea stars are not fishes.

Starting kids at this age should be the goal of each of us as reef keepers, not only does it spur their curiosity, but it gives them a sense of responsibility when they learn that some pollutants and rising temps account for bleaching events (they know what bleaching is as well...)

Great little class, we always have fun.
