Shimek's S-15 report

Interesting new article written by Shimek that tests different artificial salt mixes to real sea water. The S-15 report:

Well I for one am sure thinking about it after reading this article! You can get Crystal Sea Salt Mixture, 150 Gallons for Bioassay Research at the link below. I still have a 200 gallon bucket of IO I will use, but I am going to try this other salt just to see if there is any difference.

guys,

i remember reading all about this report in rec.aquaria.marine.reefs a couple of years ago. it seems to be researched, sponsered, paid for, excetra by the manufactur of the salt the show up as "best". it was also the cause for the loss of credibility of the author. in other words, look a little deeper and you may discover it is complety bogus.

Bill,

I guess I am a little confused (surprise!), I beleive the tests and current article were completed by Shimek just recently this year. I know there have been past corrupt salt mix comparisons but I do not believe that this is the case on the S-15 report.

After having read the article I highly suspect the end results. There are far too many variables that were not controlled, that could have been, to give merit to the study. Human error, his "desk" was his lab, temp fluctuations of 10 degrees (which batches stayed stable and which staywed low and which stayed high as well as which ones bounced up and down the 10 degrees), what type of hydrometer and what are it's variances and how was it cleaned between each test of each batch of water? Who sponsored the test and what if any outside motives may have been involved? I'm not saying that his findings couldn't have been correct, just that there are far too many uncontrolled variables to give high merit to the study.

i switched to instant ocean two years ago after using the pricey german salt. my tank is doing as well or better with instant ocean. i will stick to instant ocean untill i decide to propogate urchins. at that time i will switch to the reccomended urchin raising salt.

ROTFLMAO I agree!

Everyone seems to be jumping on the "quick fix" bandwagon again. And, like previously mentioned, there are way too many variables. BTW, did anyone have to pay for this one?

Don't be sliding over the fact that one of those aquariums used NSW (natural sea water only) and had the same levels as the ones using the mixes. <------ PAY ATTENTION HERE

i always try to avoid instant ocean, just not a big fan of it. and that test shows me exactly why. i never used corallife, and the product i use wasn't tested (reef crystals). so i am considering the switch, but i haven't seen it sold here yet. overall, i thought the test was very informative, regardless of who paid for it.
