Interesting that the science community points the finger...
Nice little article that seemingly points the finger at the aquarium ornamental trade as a reason for areas of low population density in one specie of Caribbean sea star...

I was chided that most folks won't realize that these are not reef seastars (and exactly WHAT do they look like?)

So are these being imported in large numbers and sold as Protoreaster Linkii?

Possibly, but the major impact is that their collection and subsequent d4emise is contributed partially to the aquarium trade rather than the anthropomorphic changes in the local environment (ie, extra runnoff that dilutes the salinity, etc). These are actually not directly related species, and although somewhat similar in appearance, they are easily differentiated based on their gross morphology and collection locals.

Oh yeah, we received a shipment of about 100 of those just last week
Never seen one before, nor seen a pic of one in anyone's tank. Sigh....the hobby makes a convenient scapegoat at times. I'm surprised PETA hasn't jumped on it.

miaybe the folks with fish-0nly systems are having an impact, but these are definitely NOT reefsafe, nor around most bivalve mollusks. I have never seen thes outside their natural habitats, and find it amazing that some of the folks in the "scientific community" have such a narrow view of the aquarium trade in general...
