Global Warming
Hi guys, I'll be taking a sabbatical from the boards, but I figured I'd throw you some bait before I high-tailed it.
Is global/oceanic warming occuring? Why or why not? How do we know?

I think the bigger question is if it is occuring, why? It is a given that the climate changes and does flip flops on a regular basis. True the time line is much longer that what humans know.
Just my 2 cents
Jon

No not waders, GorTex is the parent company for Patagonia, NorthFace, etc. You're going to need parkas.

Gonna need more than parkas when thermohaline circulation shuts down.

Actually, we're supposedly in an small "lull" in an ice age (according to Bill Bryson in "A Natural History of Almost Everything). I believe there's firm evidence of global warming - the question is; how much is a natural cycle and how much a manmade event.
I've been researching climate during the rise of corals; Mid-Triassic to Jurassic. Apparently, when corals formed and spread around the world, the climate was much warmer than it is now. Which suggests that current coral bleaching episodes are responding to the rapid change in global temperatures rather than the temperature itself.
There's some evidence, btw, that coral bleaching is an adaption scheme, that they're expelling their zooanthellae in order to recapture zooanthellae that works better at current temperatures.

I tend to agree with tg's assessment that the bleaching is due to rapid fluxuation in the temperature, rather than the actual temperature. Keep in mind the unprecidented impact that humans have had on the environment. We are probably the first, and only, living things on this planet to have a direct influence on the earth's climate.

Nope! The rise of plants on earth changed our atmosphere from CO2 to nice oxygen and nitrogen! Which changed our climate from a hothouse to it's present glory.

Hi tankgirl! I guess what I was trying to say is that man's influence on the climate took two hundred years, when all other influencing forces took millions of years.
