Ban on Fiji CITES animals on now...

http://www.cites.org/eng/news/sundry...renewed2.shtml

Original link copied from JT's post on RDO's industry forum.

This will mainly affect live rock and corals - as of right now, US Fish & Wildlife is refusing imports from Fiji.

This is going to have a major impact on availability and PRICE of Fiji rock and corals.

FYI...

Most fish are not on the list, but corals and live rock are. Many acros, much live rock (dare I say most live rock?) come from Fiji.

It's going to have a ripple effect.

Well I'm sure now that Fijiian exporters are being hit in the pocketbook, they'll probably get their act together and get their paperwork in order, but until then, imports are suspended indefinitely.

What technologies, research is going on to determine the impact of the hobby?

You won't have Hawaiian corals - no corals are taken from HI. There's bits coming out of Marshalls, many corals come out of Indonesia, as well as Solomon Islands. Still with all that Walt Smith does in Fiji with rock collection, rock aquaculture and coral farming (and I think he's farming clams too?) that will put a crimp in his lifestyle methinks... as well as anybody who depends heavily on Fijiian live rock, and corals.

From what I gather, fish will still come through, but I'd bet that many importers get shipments that include both fish and corals and rock... so if somebody can't "one stop shop" they might be inclined to order from somewhere else. It's going to put increased demand on other areas to make up the slack. Wouldn't be surprised to see prices rise too, on rock and some corals.

Guess we'll have to wait and see. Glad I don't carry Fiji rock, in fact my coral supplier hasn't brought in Fiji in a while... but it will still be interesting to see how other supplies are affected.
