slime outbreak
Is it normal to have a cyano outbreak when changing to higher lighting? I cannot remember, and want to make sure. I replaced my 15 watt NO light strip with a new 55 watt light strip a few days ago, and notice some algae growing on my walls (the ugly stuff). When will it go away? I went from 1 55 watt PC and 1 15 watt NO (70 watts) 2 having 2 55 watt PC's fyi I think maybe a skimmer is now on my list now.
The frogspawn seems to love the new light, too!

Seems like everything loves the new light Different species of algae grow best in different condtions. It may just take a while for the tank to find a balance again on competing algaes. For the mean time, watch your feeding carefully and maybe export any excesses with a few water changes to keep the slimy stuff's other sources of food/nutrients in check. The skimmer will help!

What would be a good skimmer? I have limited (and I mean limited) space in my 20g. Right now, I have 2 Powerheads aimed at the top for aggitation.

Cyanobacteria certainly flourishes where there are high levels or organics. I recently tore down a system under 700 watts of artificial light and moved it to natural light, and went through a terrible spat of Cyno. In my case feeding is very light to non existent, but light is a form of food to photosynthetic organisms and with such a dramatic shift in spectrum from 12k to 5500k I’m sure the balance of my system was interrupted, and additional food source for the Cyanobacteria. Protein Skimming is your best bet to remove the organics as well as a temporary reduction of feeding. Also keep in mind many nuisance algae outbreaks can be localized to poor circulation. Tanks chemistry and variables do not blanket the whole system, a dead spot in circulation can compound nutrients there locally and boom, and outbreak. So if you do not have a skimmer and funds are limited perhaps take a shot an increase of circulation, by water movement.

I was informed by the folks at Ruby Reef that one of the unadvertised side effects of using their Kick Ich product was that it removed cyanobacteria. It may be a good solution as it's very reef safe (I've even used it on my reef). You need to treat at 3oz per 25 Gallons instead of 2oz per 25 gallons, and it should start clearing up within a week or two.

skimmer
So, will an aqua remora & a backpack fit on my 20? I dont have much room to stick an intake tube down in my tank because of my lr. I also have maybe only a 3" opening in the back of the tank because of my glass lid.

A cpr should fit fine within that 3 inches. You can stack LR around the intake pump and the water coming out of the skimmer. This will add waterflow to your tank behind or around the LR.
