Out of control :-(

We have always been proud of our success with our tanks, but recently, our reef has gone crazy Bubble algae and the green feathery crudd is taking over. The following photos will give an idea of how bad

Water test shows everything in perfect shape. We have had a half dozen mythraxes in there, but they have failed to take care of it. Other than taking each rock out and cleaning it, does anyone have an idea how to bring this under control? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks Bill

From the last pic I take it this is the tank that houses the triggers and other fish?
Even a 150 can saturate with waste, with that many fish. The reason you are getting acceptable N levels from the tests is due to cellular lockdown. All them unwanted algaes have N and PO4 locked up and fueling growth. Its there or you would have the bloom. The algae need nutrent and light to flourish so deprive it of either and it should start to subside. Are you skimming and if so with what, any other export happeniing?

Eeew, that feathery stuff looks like the heartbreak of bryopsis I put a Coral Rabbitfish in my tank and he has eliminated every trace of anything green in there. I now have to feed him with Nori and donated macro from other people's tanks.

Pull some of that nasty stuff out of the tank, take it with you to the LFS and throw some into the fish tanks and see who eats it. I'm not sure much of anything will eat it but this method has worked for me in the past. The bubble algae, well, you could try taking a small rock with you and throwing that in too; it's worth a shot, better than taking a toothbrush to the whole tank.

Good luck,

Alice

Rabbitfish are supposedly going to eat Valonia (Bubble Algea)
never tried though
I hope you get it under control.

Unfortunately, this is in our 125gl. reef. We have 2 Rabbits in our FO. We use a Euro-reef skimmer, that pulls tons of crudd out. Lighting is with 2 -400 watt Iwaski's. Is it possible to put any type or Rabbit in a reef? We have a Goldspot and Scribbled in the FO. we have taken rocks that were covered on occasion and put them in the FO, and the Rabbits, Naso Tang, Lunar Wrasse and a couple others tore it up. But that was with out corals attached.

The rabbit fish should be OK, with the ER skimmer I would think youve got serious export, how much are you feeding the tank, and how old are the bulbs?

Thanks Doug.
What kind of Rabbit would you suggest for a reef? The lights are only about 6 or 7 months old, and run time is about 10 hours a day.Normally I feed twice a day, one feeding of meats, and one of veggies.
Thanks again. Bill
