Maroon Velvety Algea

What is the name of, and what causes the maroon colored, velvety algea? (is it even algea?) It is easy to remove with a soft brush, but I've been having large outbreaks lately.

Do a search here on trt for cyanobacteria or cyano or 'red slime algae'. You should get a ton of threads.

Ditto that, there are tons of threads about cyano. here. Be sure to syphon it out without stirring it much, it could grow where it lands. One cause is normaly a lack of water flow in effected areas.
