Little green tufts

Okay, now I know microalgae is a nuisance because it can choke out other organisms that need light but currently I am getting tiny green tufts of a soft bristly algae in my rockwork. I don't know if it is evil yet but so far it is rather pretty. Will this become a larger longer form of hair algae that I need to take care of or are there types of microalgae that can remain under control? Thanks for the feedback.

Hi Scotty, not all macros will take over and run amok in a tank, but a good many of them will. Take a look at this pic of Bryopsis as this is one of the macros that will send reefers into a panic. This stuff is tenacious and spreads quickly when it gets going. Note the plumey "fronds". You can do a search on google for more pics for comparison.

Also check out links on pests and algaes in our section called "The Reference Place" for more links to algae ID sites.

HTH,

Alice
