Is live rock supposed to turn green and red?
Sorry im a bit of a newb, so forgive me if i ask a dumb question. . My live rock has been turning green and red, yet I was sort of expecting it to turn purple. Also theres some interesting white cocoon looking things growing on my rock much like spider egg sacs (someone at a local aquarium said it was mold). I really dont think it belongs there. When I bought the rock used, I should have inspected it. The Owner said the rock was in his tank for 2 years. I have a 220 watt PC in a 60 gal aquarium, and have had the rock for about a month. Any suggestions on what i could do to about the cocoon looking things, and how to make my rocks turn purple would be appreciated.

As far as red vs. purple... corraline comes in many shades, so maybe you just have more of a reddish tint? I have some deep red as well as purple on one of my rocks.
Did you get the rock directly out of the previous owner's tank... or did it dry out or something between owners?
Not sure about the mold thing... but I'm sure someone who knows will chime in shortly!

If the rock was well maintained for 2 years you shouldn't have had to brush anything off.l
I've seen coralline come in red, purple, blue and green. It's hard scaly algae. If your rock is turning slimy or hairy, that's an algae or cyanobacter issues - totally different.
As for "mold" I've never heard of marine mold. What you describe sounds like sponges.

Absolutely, without them we will only be shooting in the dark. Jenn's statement about many multitidinally colored corallines is on the money, so pix will be a must at this point (and it could be cyanobacteria, which also comes in a multitude of colors... )
Pix Please!
