ok...

you can start a culture a number of ways...

1) You can use DTs to start a culture...i believe.
2) You can get "culture disks" that are pure and species specific

I have a plankton section in the Resources section of reeflabs.com

But here's some quickies:

lol..

nope. not me...not worth the extra effort. I'm busy enough, and freeze-dried ESV phyto has worked great for me. But I'm not even that diligent about it. Just when i think of it. maybe...once a week.

Casey,

Do you go through all of the effort to boil the water and make sure it is sterile before culturing it? I used to make my own, but didn't like having to make sure the water was totally steril. If you don't boil it, have you noticed any problems with contamination from other types of bacteria?

ok.

there's four bottles because it's like a maturation chain. As one culture matures, you use it up and save a bit to start more cultures which wait their turn in line. this way you don't ryn out and have a sustainable culture.

no I dont boil the water I change bottles every week my kids drink lots of cokes I have noticed no ill effects. Frank you can run as many bottles as you like I just make 4 cause thats the amount I use each week what I like is once you buy the culture you never have to buy it again. Frank I use a cheap air pump with a gang valve metal one. Casey

Casey, you totally amaze me! So you have a phytoplankton lab all set up! WOW!

OK, I heard this a couple years ago when I asked the same question....that it would be packed with nitrates and or phosphates. IS IT?

They said the company that makes it has some sort of system that is expensive and complicated that keeps the nitrates and phosphates out.

Shirley the Nitrates and phosphates was the first thing I tested
the culture it self has none it is in the Micro algae food you feed each new culture I dont put enough in to make it that high so as
long as you keep up with water changes it doesnt build up enough to cause any problems in fact my tank is getn better by the day since I startyed adding this stuff every night. Casey
