help id red macro
I bought this at a LFS about 6 months ago. It's slow growing and my clown tang absolutely stays away from it. Has any one seen this type? And here's a full view of my 40 gal. just set up in September. Being frugal and all, majority of my rock was dead coral rock, about 60lbs., bought at a rockyard for 10 cents a lb. Then seeded with about 20lbs. of assorted live rock. Coralline starting to take off. Look closely at the rock on the bottom of the red macro pic. Sorry for the poor quality of the pics. I didn't scrape of algae off the glass before taking them. More to come soon.

Is it the clump of red in the shadow at the top? Any possibbility of getting a closer picture. Is the clown tang in this tank?

Yeah, it is that red stuff in the upper left corner, but the first pic isn't close enough Doug? The clown is in front of the platygyra in the middle towards the bottom feeding on some red tang food. I know it's kinda blurry.

Frugal,
I can't see it at all. Just a big dark red blur.
so how about a guess
Since you've had it for a while, and it's not in particularly bright light. Does it look sort of like a red feather Caularepa?
If so it's a Wrightiella

I'd need a closer up view for a positive ID, but that looks somewhat like a Dictyota species.

That too.
Mike, how about Galaxaura or Haliptilon too?

Frugalreefer;
I don't want to criticize but a 40 is too small for tangs, especially clown tangs. They can get quite large, 10-12" and are often nasty tempered.
Just my $.02....

You're correct. It's a Galaxaura, possibly marginata. I was too lazy to get my book earlier.

What's the name of the book that you have? Aaaggh, who cares. It's red, it's healthy, it looks great in my tank. I don't really need to find out what kind it is...or I'm just as lazy. Thanks for the replies though.

Jerel,
You have two choices.........move the screen closer or buy some Tri-Focals!!!!!! Trust me, it works!!
Frugal,
Here are some Algae ID sites with photos:
http://rmocfis.upr.clu.edu/~ballan/chloro.html
http://www.coralreefnetwork.com/marl...th/Default.htm
http://www.botany.uwc.ac.za/algae/
I would recommend trying to ID this stuff. I have some dark red algae that started out as a very small patch and now, I have several BIG patches!!!! I can pull much of it out.....sort of peels off the rock like a scalp, but there are many fragments left behind to regrow. I thought mine was Red Turf (Gelidium pulsillum), but am not really sure now.
http://www.globaldialog.com/~jrice/a...ge/redturf.htm
If it is Red Turf, peeling and pruning is about my only option (except maybe an acetylene torch). If I can determine it's something else, I might be able to find a specific eater for it.
Happy Algae Hunting!
Dick
