Eel Grass
Hi everyone!
Just a quick note to ask if anyone would know of a place where I might be able to purchase some eel grass? I now know that all sea grasses are protected in Florida so that is out - any other ideas? Thanks.

Jody,
Check out:
www.gulfspecimen.org
Go to the catalog and under marine plants you can buy bunches of Thalassia (turtle grass) with mud and stuff still attached. Hope you can go to the Wasatch Marine Aquarium Society club meeting next week.

Ok so I have heard the name eel grass but turtle grass sounds ok to me!!! Anyway Jim, I will be asking my super if I can go to the meeting. She is gone until Monday so it could be hit and miss on if she will let me go. We are SO BUSY! Bill's Reef will ship but I would like to get some more things from them as well. I'll let you know. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the mention Jerel
BTW I've had some web site hosting changes, the reeflink server is no longer current due to access problems so best to use the www.billsreef.com url for current info and pricing.
Eel Grass is the common name for Zostera marina which is a cold water sea grass. Looks very simular to turtle grass (Thallasia testudinum) but will not tolerate warm water.

Hey Bill!
What is the optimal temp. for your turtle grass? I have set up a tank with a bottom of Mineral Mud of about 3 inches and then a top layer of arag. sand of about 1 inch, that should work ok but I wanted to find out about the grass temp. requirements.

Hi Jody,
The Turtle Grass likes warm temps being from the tropics. Generally mid 70's to mid 80's will do. I get my turtle grass from some collectors in Jerel's neck of the woods. They got nice warm water while I've got cold water that goods for eel grass
If your tank is a recent set up you might want to also add some fertilizer tablets when you plant. Either the ones available for FW plant tanks such as Tetra's Hilena Crypto or Jobes Fertilizer spikes from the garden center will do. I've also found Iron supplements to be very helpfull to growing sea grasses.
