WELCOME James and Sidney
Interesting article, note that it dates back to 97
Also keep in mind that while it does a fair job of explaining why you get cyano it is written as an advertisement. For those of you new to the Hobby Albert Theil promoted a long list of wonder products back then and set the stage for other entrepanuers.
Notice the dire warnings of running a tank with out a skimmer This is about the time I evolved into reefs after a lot of years with SW swim tanks. At that time the Berlin Method was big and the Jaubert System was coming into its own.
The concept of a Deep Sand Bed heavily populated by diverse infauna along with the cultivation of Macro Algae was just starting to come to the surface so to speak. Based on the methodolgy in vogue at the time the skimmer thing was(and is still) valid, However a lot of people have adopted the newer methodology with success over the last 4 years. This points out the shortcoming of printed reference materiels given the year plus lead time on books and several months on magazines.
Good reference books are a must but I feel the hobby has really taken off and enjoys more success with the advent of the internet and the almost real time exchange of information. The fact that there are many persons with formal education in the related sciences involved in the hobby helps too Even tho not everyone agrees
