Algae Pics and ID question
Hello,
I believe this is regular old hair algae, but please correct me if I'm wrong. It is a dark spinach green and does not grow all over like I'd expect, but keeps coming back on the same rocks and same pvc pipe in the back of the tank.
Here are two photos - same stuff, different lighting:
And is this Bryopsis? No one will eat any of this. It was barely on the base of an acropora frag and I pull it off just to have it return.
Thanks so much....we are about to tackle the tank...doing the 125 first, though, before diving into the reef...

Hey Shirley, now this is just a guess, but, my hair algae looks a bit different than what you have. My is longer and not as thick stranded. There is some stuff called 'Maiden's Hair', which looks like that, but again, just a guess.
The second stuff... have no idea. Notice how I stayed away from the 'algae expert' thread! Sorry, I'm not more help!

Hi Dave,
The "hair algae" doesn't look like regular hair algae to me, either, yet that's what I'd been calling it all through the big debate on DSB and Plenums and what I should do about my reef problems...I'm beginning to think it's something else...but it's definitely a problem, regardless!
I found a pic of Maiden's Hair Caluerpa, and it doesn't look the same:

Thanks,
Shirley

This is a better pic and has more info. Looks like you could even sell that stuff for some nice cash!
more Maiden's Hair...
When I did a search, it came up with some threads from RC, and it sounded like people have trouble to get this to grow. Must be the Xenia of the algae world!

My wife has a LR with Maiden's Hair when she purchased it from the LFS. It seems to get a dark color on top of it and then it disappears and new growth sprouts up! Very strange and quite beautiful and it has not spread as well.

So that is what it is. I have the stuff all over my tank. I like the look of it, so I keep it. I just thought it was a type of hair algae, yet looked decent.

Dose your system with "SPECIAL BLEND". I had the same problem a while back. This stuff works a miracle on nuisance algae. Completely reef safe. If your LPS doesn't have it, I will pick some up tomorrow and send it to you if you'd like.

Shirley, I've got that in my tank too And and the stuff in the "Algae Expert" thread. Sure would like to find some way of getting rid of it.
Hey Mucho...what makes Special Blend special, anyway? I'm a chicken heart for adding anything to my tank

Seems like somebody has been using to many acronyms lately, MUCHO REEF.
"If your LPS doesn't have it," LPS-LFS all the same.

i have both maidenhair and hair algae in my tank.... the first pics look like the hair algae i have and does not look like the maidenhair. The MH i have has very delicate, smooth looking strands, kinda like soft baby hair (with no split ends), only lime green, and 1-2 inches in length.... my hair algae is a darker green, somewhat bushy and snarly looking, it looked different before i tossed an urchin in my tank, he eats it right up.
Maidenhair:
i don't know if this helps

Shirley, I'm not exactly sure what the stuff in the first pic is either, but I can tell you, I've pulled enough of that crud to last a lifetime. My friend's tank would get overrun with it time and again-we finally had to tear the tank down and flush everything to rid the system of a heavy nutrient load/sink.
That second pic looks like the "heartbreak of bryopsis" all right. I'd banish that rock out of there ASAP. Frag the coral well above the algae and dump the rock. Bryopsis is sure pretty; too bad it's just so invasive.

Thanks to all for your responses. Haven't been able to get online for a couple days...another story...
Anyhow, I will frag the coral tomorrow.
Should I just eliminate that nice piece of LR with all the Maiden's Hair or what ever it is?
I agree, the pic that I posted that was labeled Maiden's Hair looked like grape caluerpa to me, too.
Anyhow, I'm thinking it's not hair algae, right?
Thanks again,
Shirley (I know where the bryopsis came from...someone had frags for sale at a reef shop and there were ever-so-tiny bits of it on the rock...I didn't know what it was. It grew, I pulled it off, and then it GREW again.)
