I want to do the acid bath with base rock. Well, I don’t want to do it… should I? Also, does the rock smell when it is done?
Thanks,

Noob Reefer

Hey Noob,

... hehe.

Base rock comes in all variety. From base rock taken from 10,000 year old reefs sitting under mountians with 10,000 years of run off filling them full of nutrients and minerals, from ... frankly, illegally collected reefs (explode, dry out, and ship... though we are finally seeing the crack down on this practice (for better and worse)). In any case there is likely nutrients that could be taken out with a quick bath.
The acid bath takes about a half an hour from when you set the rocks in. You know exactly when it is done, because the foam stops being produced. I would stop at 40 min. whatever the case.
The rock does not smell strong after an acid bath.

Because we are a store, I can not recommend an acid bath ever... wink wink. I have heard lots of others having great success with this method... nudge nudge.

We are certainly behind in taking pictures of this tank. I couldn't be happier with it though. The growth and colors are phenomenal. We never did add more fish. Even Li agreed, for some reason the tank looks just fine with the two larger fish and the two pairs of little cleaner gobies (Li is famous for overstocking his tanks).

Unfortunately, I can not go back and edit the first post any longer.
Here are some changes:
1st. We will be swapping out the tunzes for two Vortex 40s. There is nothing wrong with the Tunzes at all, simply we will be carring both brands at the store and I have 20 tunzes running through out it already. If someone is looking for a bargin on hardly used pumps, this would be a good time to call Li!

Since we put the rock right onto the back glass the 6-bulb Tek wasn't cutting the spread on the 30" front to back. We decided since we have Tek and ATI fixtures on empty tanks through out the store we might as well show off a retro kit. Li simply screwed together four pieces of angled aluminum and mounted our retro kits right to it. Because this is an SPS focused tank we through four of the eight bulbs on an ice-cap 660. Most of the corals have gotten a little bit brighter. Only the bleached out red-plannet hasn't come back(it wasn't getting any light before as it was too far forward) ironically this is our fastest growing coral... go figure.

Here is the new stock/equipment list:

Fish:

OLD LIST:
1) Pair of sharknose gobies (ORA) - Stocked 10/15/08

2)Flame fairy Stocked 11/08

5)mystery wrasse
