this is my 4th apt tank. a 30 90 37 and now a 75. I like this size.

depending on what you want to keep 6x54w is at the maximum end of lighting you will need (clams full blown sps). for typical beginners corals this will be too much. I have seen 4x54 in a beginning 55 and not be able to keep a lot of softies because the "sun" is too bright. the octo 150 should be enough skimmer for this tank, and definately consider what you want to keep. i may consider a 20 gallon long if space is a concern (i'm sure it is in an appartment) instead of the 30 and a lot of people on here can help you out with baffling and what not but i'd just do two chambers keep it simple. skimmer:return.

i setup the 30 gallon very simply and had a lot of success. i setup the 90 with the same equipment as the 30 (not enough filtration or lighting) and struggled with algae and keeping corals alive, then i scaled down to a 37 cube tank and added a metal halide learned alot and had more success, and now with this 75 i have learned from a lot of my past mistakes (so far, i still ended up with some aiptasia somehow and redbugs once). so i have some experience with apt tanks and sometimes it goes well and other times its an eyesore if you aren't willing to put the time and effort in (including reading a few books and being on the threads which are a good start).

I do work at ocean's floor in greenville and still live in a small house in clemson so any help or questions you may have feel free (though i feel i am usually at Ocean's floor. also i can drill glass but am not insured to do so i have a portable press and the correct bits with a little experience.

lol i even have some leftover stuff i can show you and see if you can make use of it, but reminder and warning it is leftover.

the 37 cube is still around and a pine stand that i did a little work too that is for a 75 or 90.

skey... thanks for the advice man. I'm really excited to get this project going, but I know a little patience up front will go a long way in not making more mistakes. I like the fact I have an experienced aquarist right here in Clemson and on this board. I would love to take a look at some of your leftovers and see if anything is useful.
I'm thinking I will have about 1.5 to 2 feet underneath the main tank to put the sump. I don't want it too crowded under there cause I want to make sure the stand and support for the main tank is very good, if not overkill. I'm thinking about just purchasing a smaller acrylic sump that will fit underneath so all of the overflow problems are fixed.
Skey, can I in some sense hire you to maybe help me plan this a bit and where everything will go and all. I'd like to do it right the first time. I have a good idea for lighting, overflow, sump, and tank now. I will probably post a new thread on another topic soon enough. Thanks

OK I've done the side by side thing and it will work without problems but several things will have to be considered.
first, as mentioned is that you will need to insure that there in only down hill flow to the sump which may mean ridged plumbing instead of the flex. this may be noisier but being inside a bar that may not be a problem.

As long as the bottom of your hang on overflow box is higher than the top of your sump you shouldn't need to drill your sump unless you are going to run an external return pump.

A pre drilled (RR) tank would not be in your best interest in this case IMO. the drains will be to low to use.
I like Tom's suggestion to drill the end of your tank and do a coast to coast overflow on that one end or you could just a pvc 90 with a grill around it.
The display will only drain as low as you overflow/spillway.

well, here's the update... after some measuring and adjusting with the bar... I have decided with help from Scott at Oceans Floor that I can use a 20 long under the tank with part hanging out the side for the skimmer. This solves all of my problems with the sump and flow thing.
I got a quote from oceans floor today and plan to order all of the stuff soon. Can't wait to get the tank set up and running.
