I had a stand for a 75 that was built this way and it was very strong and light.....we tend to way over build our stands LOL
Maybe i will draw a sketch (sketchup) something over the next couple of nights to better depict what Im thinking

If you use 3/4 ply, it will be more than strong enough. And you dont need a center brace if you want to overlap one of the doors with 1/8" stock to block the light. Or copy Perfecto stands and put a hinged center brace in; that gives you a safety factor, but lets you hinge it down and lock it in place to add/remove sump.

What dimensions? If its something standard, you can buy it cheaper than I can make it more than likely.

I'm not entirely sure yet, most likely 60x18x25. Maybe a little taller/shorter. The problem for me is that they make all these tanks out of really thin acrylic. I want no bowing, so I'm thinking of getting 3/4"+ acrylic. That supposedly store bought aquarium I got taken on bowed like crazy and 3/8 is evidently what most of the 5' tanks are made of. (the tank's still sitting in my garage) I've been playing around with the Acrylite GP calculator while saving up.

Height is the main factor in determining thickness, followed by length. Also, I'm assuming you're OK with a eurobraced top and NOT rimless.
And Acrylite GP is one of the best to make tanks with, second to Polycast which is quite a bit more.

Sure. What do you have in mind? Whatsize tank? Standard 6x2x2? What do you plan to keep? Do you want dimmable?

yup standard size dimable would be cool, depends on what it adds to the cost...... I have several fish, a cpl clams and anomes and a few soft corals. haven't had any success with stony corals yet. would like to be able to keep a flower pot alive for more than 2 weeks..... My gregorians and sea whips love my tank though......

not sure if you're still following our blog... but we had some "developments" today that could use an experienced carpenter's help. i'm glad i remembered your post :-)
have you already committed to one of the other projects? if not, we have a simple one for you: just a plain stand for our 56 column, with side and front access doors. nothing fancy... it's more of a necessity at this point.
ideally, we would like to be able to empty the tank, drill the back, and have a new stand ready to place it on before plumbing and filling it back up and putting everyone back in... all this because of a faulty bulkhead on the overflow box; the particleboard stand that came with the tank got soaked, so we don't feel safe leaving our tank on it.
anyway, i'm babbling, sorry.
let us know if you can take on another project--and also how much for the materials and labor?

I have nothing going on at the moment. What do you have in mind? Find a picture and send it to me. Need dimensions, too.

This above would be a super basic stand. I did this one with all materials leftover from past projects. The wood grain is wrong and its mixed wood types, but it was quick build.
This is a little fancier, but still "basic". All oak, but I hated the stain color. Basically anythign that ends up in my office is thrown together and looks dont matter.
And this is about as good as it gets from me:

Also, I have the bit for 1" bulkheads and can drill it for you or let you borrow it. If you are going to drill the back of the tank, I would lower the water and drill with the tank full. you will get minute debris, but glass IS made of sand
Call or text me if needed 313 6160

how about a 20 long stand? not picky black is fine. maybe a canopy with a hinged split top where half the top opens but lights stay put.

thank you so much for your replies!
we definitely would like some help with drilling the tank! we've done it once, but with an empty, brand new tank... and i did a messy job getting it started; the bit did a bit of skipping around before i could get a groove started. needless to say, i'm not so confident in my skills, especially with a stocked tank.
we decided to just pick up an extra-heavy-duty metal shelving unit and some plywood for the tank to sit on for now, since we will probably upgrade after we move. but we will definitely need your skills then! we love the setup in your dining room--obviously we'll have to copycat it :-)
since the shelving has more space (all we could fit in the old stand, due to its tiny door, is a 10 gallon), we want to upgrade the sump as well. the one we have now has a fuge in its center, and i think with a 29 or 40 gal i want to redesign it a bit. is acrylic best for baffles? or glass? any advice on how to attach it?

You can use acylic or glass. I always have spare acrylic lying around, so I use it. If I had nothing, I would use glass.
I have a spare 29 gallon I'll sell you dirt cheap. It has a hole drilled high on one end, but would work perfect for a sump. Its brand new and was only used for a week or two. If you want it and want me to build a sump, just tell me what size baffles and where you want them and I'll do the whole thing for you.
