Help mounting lights....

When I build mu canopy I wasn't thinking about mounting my lights. The front half of the canopy opens to access the tank. I have a two bulb retro T5 that I am using. If I put both bulbs in the back half of the canopy it will create a shadow in the front of the tank. My question is can I put one bulb in the front that will move with the canopy is opened? will it cause any problems for the bulb to move as long as the wiring is long enough to allow it?

Got the lights mounted and they look great. Now I just have to get it drilled and plumbed. Then it will be time to fill it up.

Sounds just fine but a pic would help. On my canopy, all of the lights are mounted on the part that opens up and flips up.

So your tank is dark when you open your canopy?

Doesn't this make it hard to work inside the tank?

Mine are mounted about the same way that Hoangs are mounted and when the canopy is open (90 degree from water surface) there is plenty of light for you to do any kind of work that you would want to do.

Chris

That's true, I do love the unobstructed access but my wife would have a fit having that much light in the room every time I opened the canopy.

I've been told by my neighbors that they can tell whenever I have the hood up! There's plenty of light to see . Also, with the "clam shell" design, you have total access to the entire tank.

I've heard that one too

I like the clamshell design too but my stand is 42" tall and my tank is 24" and this house was a lake cabin and only has 7' ceilings.
But with my tank the way it will be I'll have doors on all 3 sides and my lights on a floating panel that will lift up for access.

I am short, my canopy opens from the top now, but I'm going to have to change it to opening from the front. Otherwise I'd have to stand on a ladder to feed my fish! Factor in how easy it is for you to do these simple things. I'm not sure yet how I'm going to mount the lights.

Don't worry too much about it Traci - I stand on a chair to open my canopy!
