Nano Buildoff 2008!!!

This thread is to announce that there will be a Nano buildoff for the year 2008!

Entries will be permitted to start from 1-5-08 to 2-5-08 in a forum that we will create within the "Special events" forum for entries. After 2-5-08 the forum will be locked and no more entries will be allowed.

You will create your entry by creating a thread within the Nano buildoff 2008 fourm.

We have decided that in order to get more entries if you started a Nano build within the last month of me posting this thread you will be permitted to enter,.. if you would like to please PM me and ask me to move your thread over when entries begin.

And as always have fun with it!!! These will be the rules for the new buildoff:

Rules for the Nano build-off:

There is a Firm limit of 30 Gallons.
There is a firm sump size limit of 20G.
This is tank size, not actual water volume

Your build thread will be located in a sub-forum of the contest forum for this contest. You must use the same build thread through the whole contest and that forum is only for contest related build threads, any other type of thread will be deleted. Others can post in your build thread to comment or to talk about your setup, they are not locked to other users like Blog threads are.

You must update with at least a picture at least once per month to show the progress of your tank.

You can do whatever you want with your tank. Anything from a mantis tank to a SPS reef, but remember that it will be judged on over all appeal so however you set it up, do it well.

The judging will be done by the public, the tanks will be judged by use of a final FTS that will be part of a poll. This will take place in a poll but the results will not be seen until the voting has concluded, everyones vote counts the same. The criteria we remind people of before voting on the best tank is:
1. Health of the tank and critters
2. Over all look of the tank
3. Long term sustainability.
4. Cost and ingenuity of the design.

No prizes but winner will be TOTM if they wish.

Tank must be a new setup, or torn down completely and re-built for the contest, if you do decide to Re-Build a tank it should have major noticeable changes. Remember a big part of this contest is the initial build thread, and stocking. I don't want to see anyone take everything out of a tank, just to turn around and put it all back in and declare "done". This will also not look good at the time of voting.

There are no Cost limits, but remember everyone will be voting on the cost and ingenuity of your design, so if you spend a little extra time to DIY a few clever things, it will look good at voting time.

To enter the contest, in this forum create your entry thread describing what you plan to do, this will be your build thread for the entire contest. Remember that the more detail the better. Diagrams and pictures are encouraged. Please include at a minimum the following information in your initial post:
  • Basic description
  • Size tank planned
  • Total volume of planned system
  • Planned organisms to inhabit the system
After the initial post you must clearly document the progress of your build, up to the point that the tank is up and running. Once the tank is running you must document the tank's progress, any new livestock, and any changes in the system, keeping the viewing public up to date. Don't forget at a minimum, even if you have made no changes to the tank, you must update your thread at least once per month with the tank's progress.

Have fun, and happy Nano-reefin!

Well I have atemted a nano a few times and failed but have done well with my 120. I would like to join the build off but wondering if I will be doing enough changes to qualify? It is a torn down 5.5 gallon right now. That is all I have room for in the bedroom. The old set up was all contained within the tank with a corner sectioned off to hide the powerhead and heater.

The new set up I would be replacing the actuall tank and drilling it to run a 5-7 gallon bucket sump next to the dresser, so no sectioning in the new tank. I need to rebuild the canopy as the old one is swollen and the corners split. need a new reflector, new heater, return pump, may run a refugum in the sump. May try to get a skimmer in somwhere, not set on sand or bare bottom.

Guess I'm just wonering if I can join in too? I think if I'm in the build off I will be a bit more diligent with this tank and have a better outcome.

Thanks,
Brett

If I'm not mistaken it is all year long but you need to enter by Tuesday.

The max display size is 30G
And the max sump size is 20G

If you wanted to swap that 40 sump out for a 20G sump you could enter.
