if i used a 5 gallon bucket of sand with a couple of inches of water running over the top would that count towards my sump size?

Are you asking for reasons to conform to the rules here or is it a technical question?

you should be fine IMO...a five gallon bucket with sand and other things won't make a dent in the overall water volume

haha, i couldnt fit one in... i could fit a trash can sump, but thats not really what i want and the dimensions of it it would actually have to be one inside another to be strong enough...
i could put them alongside but the mrs is very particular about things looking tidy.... so i have to show her what i want to do and get an opinion before i do it.. will run it by her later and see what she says..

ok, so have been looking at furniture... the mrs didnt want me to build my own stand....um anyone would think shes seen my diy before...
was going to have the stand and a pice next to it, but unfortunately too much changing rooms and extreme makeover has raised expectations of interior design....haha actually our place is pretty nice and im not respnsible for that so theres method to it...
sooooo we scoured various stores, with me becoming more and more disheartened... until the mrs suggested ikea... saw 2 potential tv stands ... stronger than a normal cabinet... one i liked more and 1 she liked more..
there were a few more places she suggested we look before we buy ( i buy immediately normally haha) as we were going out she suggested looking in the returns...and there low and behold was a returned one of what we had looked at.... so i snapped it up and nipped it off home
need to do some mods to it, but i think it'll do the job + i think i can fit the fuge i wasd given, a skimmer, and i will try and do and rsb in it as well
will post pics later

Sounds Cool! That's allot easer than building a stand as well
As far as 24" T5's go, they are really easy to get,.. go to reefgeek.com they sell them

well my plan was to try and get everything 2nd hand...its slow going tho as the kind of equipment i want seems to be the stuff people hang onto... just occasionally selling when they upgrade... theres a fair bit of stuff ive seen that i dont want
the stand worked out well, because it was someones reject... so more inline with the design haha... so the prob with the 24" t5s is there arent any used ones around... i have a lead on a used 24" mh/t5 unit... waiting to hear on a price tho

Yeah, That's the problem with getting things second hand Allot of times what people are getting rid of is not the kind of stuff you need.

I was going to build my own stand for my large tank but opted to buy an oak kitchen cabinet and some 2-by's instead...I figured it would look a LOT better LOL...and to think that I bought a table saw and some other tools to diy mine grrrrrrr
