Refugium or Not?

Setting up a 90 gallon FOWLR. I've the got the tank and lunar aqaulight, but now need to select a filter system. I'd like to set up a sump with protein skimmer. The question is should it be a refugium? If so, what kind and size?

i really see no need for a refugium in a fowlr. they only benefit might be reduced algae on the glass but thats pretty hit or miss.

welcome to trt btw!

I'm beginning to think the same way. I'd like to upgrade my wet/dry on my 46 bowfront since it's the one with the corals. I think I'll get the refugium for it. But then what should I do for the FOWLR?

Large skimmer in the sump for a FOWLR. The idea is being able to remove any wastes that you stick in the tank (food, or poop, which ever form it's currently taking ) before it gets a chance to break down. If you rely on a refugium, you're likely going to have more algae problems over aggressive skimming. That's true in a FOWLR as well as reef.

Welcome to TRT!

Thanks very much. I really appreciate the help. Love the link with all the pet stores. I've already visited one today.

I agree...I have a fuge as part of my system, but it's secondary to my large skimmer. Actually, I think the biggest plus of my fuge is the food it provides.
